Our weekly OPP Kids program is moving along smoothly with our students. Engaging them in open conversation about the potential challenges they will face as they exit Rhema within the next couple of years, has been most rewarding. They’re grasping the various concepts and playing out the different scenarios, drawing conclusions based on the different opinions that they might have in the future. Last week we discussed algorithms, YouTube searches and how the internet isn...’t private whatsoever. Officer Nie explained just how fast information circulates these days, and how the average person stays on a page or a profile for only seven seconds before scrolling to another on social media. We touched on just how instantaneous it can be to ruin another peer’s social and emotional well-being through cyber bullying. The students were also given various strategies to avoid cyber bullying and how to avoid unwanted followers on your social media accounts through blocking or telling a trusted adult. One student even took us down the path of identity theft, so the class briefly discussed what it is and how to recognize it, along side phantom accounts and how to recognize when your social media accounts have been hacked. Recognizing that the internet and social media adds tremendous benefit to our lives, if utilized properly by mature and responsible individuals, it can certainly add value to our lives. However it’s up to all of us to recognize the dangers and to constantly have open communication with our loved ones about what’s happening online. It is crucial for new users to have clear boundaries when using the ‘net so they stay safe and avoid the various mishaps that can happen. That caps off the week’s 0PP Kids program and we would like to thank office Nie again for educating us in these crucial topics!

As we observed Remembrance Day today at Rhema, we were most honoured to welcome our very own custodian and Reverend, Mr. Levi Beardy, who served for 21 years as an Communications Research Specialist within signals intelligence, during the Cold War. He says that it’s a special day to remember everyone who fought for our freedom’s and he praises God everyday for having His hand on him, while helping him face his fears during times of extreme danger and uncertainty. In prev...ious years, Reverend Beardy was asked by Toronto Mayor John Tory to pray for peace in the city in his native tongue. What an honor! It was an honour for our students and teachers to hear him talk about his experiences and offer his heartfelt prayers to our students, our future. He stressed the importance of turning to God when you’re scared or need help and to never fear because He is always with us! After touring around our classrooms, our students (in their bubbles of course!) joined Reverend Beardy and Principal Holmes around our Canadian flag to observe two minutes of silence and prayer. We are beyond grateful for the experience that we were graced with today, by listening to Reverend Beardy talk, which helped us to really gauge what war is about. Thanks Reverend Beardy! May God bless you always! Levi Samson Beardy

Last week, Officer Nie put his grade 5/6’s on the spot and asked how they would describe the internet to to a brand new user. They said things like: *Most people in the world go on it at least once a day... *It can be dangerous *You can download and play games on it *You can type in questions and learn about different topics *You can talk to your friends on it *It’s where a bunch of computers are linked together One hundred percent of them agreed that the internet isn’t private and that not everything they read or see is true. Officer Nie accompanied their accurate contributions with the advice to not get annoyed or upset when their parents limit their screen time as the internet, as it can be a highly dangerous place if not monitored regularly. He raised the point that the internet has become a widespread platform for cyber bullying and discussed the severity of the emotional damage that occurs after an incident. Statistics show victims perform poorly in school, have feelings of shame, experiences disruptions with sleep and eating. They exhibit symptoms of anxiety, depression, while often times not wanting go to school or be social. The bully also tends to perform poorly in school, has difficulty maintaining social relationships and oftentimes has troubles trusting others. With 47% of Canadian parents reporting their child experiencing some form of cyber bullying, it’s most definitely a topic that needs to be addressed more frequently! Thanks Officer Nie for another information packed class. We appreciate your expertise in these tough areas!Ontario Police Department

Wow! We couldn’t have asked for a brighter, happier and more adventurous Saturday morning to enjoy The Amazing Car Rally, kickstarting this year‘s fundraising events. Annual events like this are always such a highlight and prove to be successful because of how everyone comes together in harmony to chime in! We have our current Rhema families involved and we always see some of our Rhema alumni come back to help out, including students, parents and even grandparents...! The Rhema Community is truly magnificent! This year, given the new challenges and regulations, it was proven to be a piece of cake for our Amazimg Car Rally committee. The entire event was a tremendous success from the start, when everyone came to register their team/car name, until the end at the tailgate closing prayer and prize wrap up finale. The five destinations where clues were found, were at some of Peterborough’s most famous places! Locations included the Peterborough Zoo, Lift Locks, Beavermead Park, Nicholls Oval, and Herold Town Conservation Area. Thank you so much to ALL of our volunteers who worked at all of the stations at these various locations, to ALL of our participants and to our Amazing Car Rally committee! Congratulations to all of our winners! Great job!! We will announce the grand total of how much was raised for this event later on this week so stay tuned!

Even though tomorrow will look a little different, it’s always fun to sit back and reminisce about the incredible memories made in previous years with the traditional Amazing Race/Walk. Our families certainly rock the Rhema school spirit!
