Last week, RHMS Grade 1 and 2 classes were in for a treat when they participated in a virtual author visit from children’s story book writer Shauntay Grant. The visit was hosted by Richmond Hill Public Libraries to celebrate Black History month. Students learned about the author and her storybooks in class a day prior to the live event. Shauntay Grant read her books Africville and The Walking Bathroom to the class. She also spoke about her experience as an African American author and her journey to publishing her books. There was time for a question and answer session which was enjoyed by all. #rhms #privateschool #blackhistorymonth #virtualtrip

RHMS celebrates Random Acts of Kindness Day because we know everyone can use more kindness in their lives. During the pandemic, we can virtually do something exceptional for others because even the smallest act of kindness can change a life. Make a positive change, help make kindness the norm! #RHMS #privateschool #richmondhill #randomactsofkindnessday #explorethegood #makekindnessthenorm

In French class, RHMS students in grades 6 to 8 have been learning about Black History month. The students watched an educational video describing the amazing things black people have achieved in history. The class discussed what they learned responding to each other in French. Their task was to choose one inspirational black person from the book Young Gifted and Black by Jamia Wilson and summarize their biography in a short paragraph. After creating a poster of their sel...ected person, each student presented a screen recording of their information followed by a class discussion post where feedback from their peers were welcomed. This task encouraged the students to consolidate their writing after reviewing how to properly conjugate verbs and practice their oral communication and pronunciation skills. #RHMS #privateschool #blackhistorymonth #french See more

On February 11th, the world celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day was established by the United Nations Internationally to recognize the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. RHMS Grade 7 and 8 students will be participating in a virtual Science Expo to share their projects and showcase their ideas. Some of the amazing topics exhibited by our female students include how to build an effective electromagnetic lock-in com...partment for packages, preventing porch pirates; how to amplify and increase the concentration of sound through surgical masks to determine which acoustic mirror is the most successful in reflecting and focusing on sound waves; how to make a cost effective portable water purification system with a substance that will make the pH and TDS levels of the water most clean; and how different materials used to wrap foods compare in terms of their ability to keep the food clean from airborne moisture to keep the body safe and healthy. Here at RHMS we believe in preparing our students with the tools and the mindset to explore and navigate the world around them. Through hands-on-learning and an inquiry-based approach to STEM, we hope to see them grow into confident and assertive leaders and role models for future generations. Best wishes to everyone participating! #RHMS #private school #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience #STEMlearning #science #technology #virtualsciencefair

Global and Canadian Communities were highlighted within the RHMS Grade 6 Social Studies lessons and activities this month. Students applied their knowledge of community features, digital editing skills, visual art and linguistic abilities to write and design postcards from various communities around the world. The postcards informed imaginary recipients of the special features that each community possess such as culture, diverse population, language and climate. These were ...demonstrated within their text and graphic designs. Students were given the opportunity to present their postcards to classmates, ask and answer questions about the communities chosen, and showcase final products within Schoology Class Galleries. #RHMS #privateschool #globalcommunities #canadiancommunities #digitalediting #visualarts #culture #diversepopulation #language #climate #schoology See more

Today, the Elementary students of RHMS honoured the Veterans who served in times of war, conflict and peace to acknowledge Remembrance Day. As part of an art task, each classroom worked on beautiful bright poppy drawings to showcase at home as a window display along with some sketches that showed emphasis of Remembrance Day symbols, including soldiers, poppies, crosses and memorial tombstones. Each sketch was compiled into a Google Slides memorial presentation that was shared online for all to see. #rhms #privateschool #richmondhill

The grade eights have been learning how to create mobile applications using React Native, a popular platform-agnostic framework. By using a combination of JavaScript and HTML language to create their apps, they now recognize how to build a basic login screen and are beginning the process of learning how to create functional buttons for any mobile app.

Grade six students were excited for their first Code HS assignment! They learned how to code commands using Python. Students generated a big block letter representing their first name with a background of alternating colours based on a holiday theme of Thanksgiving or Halloween. The wow factor was the special feature added to the images such as a pumpkin or a spider web. #rhms #privateschool #richmondhill
