Head down Duffus Street (alllll the way to the waterfront) and you’ll hit the Richmond Terminals. These used to be called the Richmond Yards, home to Halifax’s first railway We like to think of the new Richmond Yards as another significant intersection connecting Haligonians to wherever they need to go: 5 minutes to Dartmouth, 10 to Bedford, and steps to Halifax’s vibrant North End.
What’s with the name? Ready for a quick history lesson? Prior to the Halifax Explosion, Richmond was a well-defined neighbourhood and home to over half(!) of Halifax’s population. After 1917, the area was rebuilt, but the name Richmond mostly disappeared. Returning the Richmond name to its geographical home is just one of the ways we plan to recognize the historical and cultural significance of our neighbourhood. Plans, plans, plans! What North End business are you planning to visit this weekend?
Richmond was once a vibrant neighbourhood in the North End. However, after it was destroyed in the Halifax Explosion, it was never rebuilt. We named Richmond Yards after this lost but not forgotten community. Article written by Marilyn Davidson Elliott
Richmond Yards aims to add to the North End's culture, not take away from it. In celebration of Westwood Developments' 30th anniversary we've put in place the Richmond Yards Community Fund, a $30,000 fund to support non-profit organizations in the North End of Halifax. Richmond Yards is Halifax's newest district located at the corner of Almon and Robie. A point of intersection for the city, Richmond Yards is named after the historic Richmond district that was destroyed in the Halifax Explosion. It will add to the North End's already strong community and culture with green spaces, and an arts and culture centre. We have one goal: create space for everyone.
