Motorcycle Season in Canada ends when you park the bike in its' Winter berth . If you have had a successful Season , then you have not dropped your bike , nor r...earranged the metal on it unintentionally . To boot , you have also not broken any limbs . If you have not scared yourself into total trauma , then your next Season should be a breeze . Avoiding a collision may add years to your life (LOL) ! So now ,there are several different suggestions to properly store a bike - Including for those of us living above the 49th parallel , such major items as adding fuel stabilizer and removing the battery from the bike . A good cover for your machine keeps the bird feces from attacking your expensive paint . What you may consider while your wheels are in hibernation are those neglected repairs , now that your not shelling out cash for fuel . Usually if your like me , the Winter is a good time to surf the Internet and go on a shopping spree to bring your ride up to top form . There are bargains to be had , if you know where to look. I hope we all can survive the S.A.D. Season and be filled with great joy come Spring and the start of a new Season - Kick start my heart ! See more

If you happen to live in the Great White North , you all know what I'm talking about . If you have decided to not put your ride away for the Season as yet , one of the biggest performance robbers you may find is under inflated tires . Bad enough that you lose gas mileage because of the cooler weather , to boot this time of year the cold will also soften your tires . I can't give you an exact figure but for every so many degrees drop in temperature , your tire pressure will dr...op . Nitrogen or air in the tires , either will need to be topped up in this weather . What you may notice also , hopefully not if you let your tire go unattended , you may lose that slick handling advantage as well . It could be curtains , so just a warning - High maintenance standards should be kept up . Don't become a suicide jockey , as my favorite prayer before each ride is , 'God, it's not a good day for dying! ' See more

Slip sliding away , as I have a lot of chrome to keep up . Whether you own a Vintage Bike or a Show Bike , most of you like me , hate polishing and waxing chrome . The thought of rust on your chrome terrifies you to death . I have found the Fountain of Youth for Chrome , it's called Vaseline . I remember when I was younger hearing about War Motorcycles being stored in crates with parts covered in grease to preserve them . This is what gave me the idea of Winter Storage preser...vation using Vaseline on the Chrome of my bikes . It is easy enough to apply , gives super protection from the elements and preserves that finish that you so badly want . The only drawback , come Spring is removing it completely from your Chromed surfaces , this will take a bit of time and effort on your part , but the results will be , years of like - WOW ! This simple and inexpensive method of preservation will keep your ride looking good for many rust free years . However , your Friends may call you Tom Slick ! See more

I may try to squeeze in one more oil change of the Season on the 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD , oil is looking kind of murky . Not that I have put that many miles on The Old Girl , but it has been 6 months plus since she got new oil and a new filter . I am pretty sure I have now gotten all the kinks out of her for this year , the only other thing I may do is empty the float bowls as Suzie sat for a while this Summer , a derelict without a cause . Maybe come Spring , I may find a new home for her , but it ain't here yet . In the mean time , the Season is wearing thin , so I am headed to Madoc tomorrow on a test run to check her out under load . Hoping for good results , flying high into the wild blue yonder Amigos !

A big thank you to all my supporters from Suzuki motorcycles , without you , I would just be running off at the mouth . Up here in Eastern Ontario , as motorcycle Season draws to a close , articles may be becoming less frequent as I empty my brain of ideas , so this is where you the people are asked for your input . Requested are new ideas , technical support , and exciting stories of the road , to help towards keeping this newsletter fresh and exciting . Remember , one hand washes the other , a bad pun during these Covid times , but none the less , we need your help . Please do not be afraid to submit an article , because some of my best ideas come from left field . Thanks to you it's working !

My 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD is up and running once again after a 2 month hiatus . I had to replace the oil pan gasket , henceforth , the exhaust system had to come off too . This is not a job I enjoy , removing 14 bolts , and thank God they all came out solid from the oil pan . However 7 out of 8 bolts were removed with relative ease from the block . One 'Sonnymabitchin' snapped inside the block and I myself had no good luck removing its' remains . Fortunately it was saved by the... local bike shop , who inserted a heli-coil I had supplied into the head to where the broken bolt was . I also had to order from E-Bay a set of exhaust muffler connectors as stock units are obsolete from Suzuki . Reassembly was not an easy job, I may have wanted to try a gasket removal spray on the oil pan , but did it old school by scraping and cleaning up with steel wool . The exhaust system was not a breeze as I used a 36mm socket (Should have been a 38mm socket) to install the exhaust muffler connectors and banged on with a rubber mallet . When the centre exhaust was installed , torquing the bolts was a hair raising experience as the flanges slipped into place with a clank as they lined up and i just continued until all bolts were snug . Exhaust clamps were a bit of a chore as I had bent them previously , but managed to secure them . Oil was already in the bike from the time the oil pan gasket was installed , a need to top up was necessary because oil lines were emptied . A little Lucas Fuel System Cleaner was added to stale gas already in the tank but with a dash of coaxing she fired up . Check the tires , out for a short test ride , return to oil the chain . And now the fun begins ! See more

Stretch your coffee break - NOT ! The stock bars on my 2008 Suzuki GSF1250 Bandit are okay , providing you have Gorilla arms to reach them , however not in my case as I am also vertically challenged . That long stretch over the gas tank makes my neck sore and my wrists as well over time . Count on Action Jackson for a remedy - Easier than you think ! I have tried different set ups to make the handlebars more ergonomically sound , including thick washers under the risers and d...ifferent style bars . I was never satisfied until I came up with the combination I now have . I installed extended stainless steel lines for the front brake and clutch mechanisms , longer bolts to secure the risers , 1" thick nuts under the risers and a set of Daytona Super Bike Bars . This set up gives me the touch I need to put me upright and puts an end to the general aches and pains associated with the sport bike posture . So , you thought I was going to feed you to the fish ? Thank you to those of you whom recently signed into LIKES for Suzuki motorcycles . With this Covid Crappola ongoing , things have become a tad mundane , there is more to life than avoiding people in a paranoid way . Life goes on , as I have been lacking to publish articles more frequently because my brain is slightly stagnant . It's not that I don't think of you people , my dedicated fans , I am currently in a bit of a slump . My GSF1250SA Bandit recently had a rather costly ...upper fairing repair and is sorely in need of a complete paint job , however I will have to come up with some Pesos . The GS750ESD has been sitting a while to date as I need to wait for parts to come in , to reassemble and replace the oil pan gasket . Things just are not a happening too damned quickly here at home base .But , God willing , He will pull me through the doldrums of boredom and move me on to higher plains , sooner than I am expecting , to get both machines up to par once again . Then , in the twinkling of an eye , I will ride the Halleleujah Trail . See more

If only I had known , them's the brakes ! I have struggled for countless hours trying to repair my front braking system on my 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD , with no luck till tonight . It all started on Sunday , when my Friend and I installed a new piston kit in the front brake assembly , which looked like a bargain on a used unit for $29.95 CDN from E-Bay .The bike had been down for 3 weeks and I managed to get pressure on the lever after several attempts . Unfortunately as I found... out , the calipers were not releasing . Several E-Mails later , after contacting our CVMG section President I was given a solution which I improvised on with success . He suggested taking a strand from a wire brush , in order to open up the return orfice . This was not cutting the mustard , so I used a Mechanic's Pick and tapped where the hole should have been with a plastic tipped hammer , while rotating the pick and tapping cautiously . Zip , bam , boom , the hole opened up and just for a convincer , I took the wire stand held in vice grips to test the hole to see my results . After bleeding the system and expelling all the air , the brakes now work spot on . A little patience and persistence can go a long way to pay day - Ah , the sweet smell of success ! Author's Note : Seller of brake assembly claimed it worked when it came off the bike - I got all my money back + Tax .

Suzuki motorcycles 13.08.2020

Ouch , don't do that ! It can be quite costly in the long run to make a mistake such as I when bleeding the hydraulic clutch on the Suzuki GSF1250SAK8 Bandit . My clutch fluid , which is essentially brake fluid eats plastic as by my own testimony . The reservoir leaked out onto my upper fairing and did some expensive damage . This was caused by , as I found out too late , the fluid spraying upwards because I failed to make sure a small metal tongue like piece was out of place , therefore nothing to stop the upward spray of the fluid inside the clutch reservoir . A penny saved , is a penny earned - Total cost for repairs is not yet in , but we are looking at least several hundred dollars in repairs to the plastic fairing because of human error - That's a hard pill to swallow !

Holy Cow , look at all the fornicating Indians ! I have been experiencing this problem with the 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD for some time now , finally got it figured out . I would be travelling about 100 kph and I was thinking the ignition was cutting out , or something was rubbing as I tended to lose power for a brief moment at a steady speed . I got to thinking today that it could be carburetion as for about 2 years now when the bike went into storage , the carbs never got draine...d . I grabbed a little white ceramic bowl from the kitchen tonight and proceeded to empty the carburetor float bowls , one at a time . To my relief I saw that #1 carburetor float bowl on the #1 cylinder was dirtiest of all . Each float bowl when drained with the float bowl plug removed had a trace of dirtiness in the gasoline . With that being said , naturally a test run was in order and I got rid of that power robbing flat spot attributed to speed at 100 kph . And to boot , the bike would just scream when it got cranked up . All set for tomorrows run and you ain't seen nothing yet ! See more

Let's not do a 'Jack Benny , let's splurge ! For about $20+ CDN , you can buy a set of digital 6" Vernier calipers , which are a great asset to chain adjustment . Your Owners Workshop Manual will tell you the tolerable limits of chain adjustment necessary for your make and model , in my case , Suzuki GSF1250SAK8 . Before adjustment a thorough cleaning with kerosene for chain and sprocket should be done with a parts brush or better yet a chain brush . I use a bio - degradable... cleaner in a spray bottle for a rinse and I cleanup with several paper shop towels . For me , I need minimum 20 mm of free play measured at random points on the chain with the digital micrometers and the bike on centrestand . I can get pretty good alignment by finding a good spot to compare , side to side , such as the distance between the head of the chain bolt and the nut . If you find a better spot to compare , all the power to you . So before you tighten the axle , do a final check on chain free play and lock her up ! Hoping you have great success and a whole lot of riding time in between ! See more

Suzuki motorcycles : By the People , for the People . Here's your chance to put your thoughts forward , to add to the postings on Suzuki motorcycles . I am a college drop out whom got himself exempted in English , basically Grade 12 level with a flair for B S , not BSc . If I can come up with a limited number of ideas more than once per month , I am so sure you have ideas floating around which would be a valuable asset to this column . Toot , toot ,ah , beep, beep ! I have yet to find a motorcycle horn that is sufficiently loud enough but to catch a mouses attention . On my 1250 Bandit , I had a Friend with great mechanical skills assist me in hooking up a pair of Fiamm Freeway blasters , a low note one (F) and a high tone (E) on my 2008 Suzuki GSF1250SA Bandit without a relay . The horns are wired in parallel , one horn replaces the stock horn for location , the other is behind the upper fairing on the side and held in place by the supplied bracket that comes with the horn . The combination of the 2 horns at 133db. each is sufficient to catch anyone's attention, regardless of being asleep at the wheel . This combination of horns ,or a similar setup , depending on what your preference for musical notes is , can be a lifesaver . Blow that out your ear !

.......... and the pain was tremendous ! I spent this weekend into Tuesday repairing the Faux Pas mistake of using octane booster in my GSF1250SA Bandit after clearing it's first tank from Winter Storage laced with Sea Foam . Things may have been okay had I waited till further into the Season to add the octane booster , however - NOT ! Under the suggestion of a Friend from my Small Engines Course , I changed out the spark plugs , the engine oil & filter , and I cleaned the a...ir filter and sensors . The engine smoothed out considerably today after fresh fuel and a good run to Havelock , Ontario for a Timmies . My oh my , for the past 5 days my schoeleosis has been acting up , and has required many uses of my TENS machine to recondition my aching back , followed by repeated use of my foot massager . I really do need to take an epsom salts bath as it is better than a hot shower to loosen sore muscles . This is my BLAH , BLAH and complain article , if it doesn't kill you , it will make you stronger . See more

Fly By Night ? If you happen to own a stock GSF1250 Bandit , you'll know what I am talking about . Those clear turn signal lenses do not show the flasher well during the daytime . My way around this was to replace the clear lenses with the amber equivalent from Suzuki and replace the amber bulbs with clear . The stock 7507 bulbs are amber , the 7506 bulb is clear , but only 21 watts bright . The solution to this , firstly , is to pick up a spray can of Brilliant Silver to mak...e the backing of the turn signal brighter reflecting . Step two is to replace the stock bulb with an 1156 bulb , which is 26.9 watts bright , and with a very slight modification can be easily installed . You will have to grind off one of the posts on the bulb to adapt the bulb to the 270 degree off set that the standard 7507 bulb allows for in order to fit it . This should light up your life , to carry on . See more

Can someone help Daniel ?

Suzuki motorcycles 08.05.2020

Oh NO , Mr. Bill ! I usually don't have much luck with old rusty bolts , but I may have found a way around old crusty bolts . I of course am referring to my 1983 Suzuki GS70ESD , which just celebrated its' 37th birthday this year . The last time I used this method , I had great success in torquing the head bolts on the exhaust system using WD 40 penetrating oil . I sprayed the head bolts profusely with WD 40 and let sit overnight , for fear of breaking a bolt off in the head... . Resulting wait was well worth while as I benefited by tightening the bolts , no breakage . I have this little experiment going on with same bike , sprayed the oil pan bolts with WD 40 to see if I could stop a slight leak when the engine is warmed up . I will follow this up and keep you informed . I hope you can wait for results of this with great antici ...... pation . See more

Shazzam ! Easy come , easy go , will you let me go ! When replacing your drive chain and sprockets on some of the older bikes that come with a 630 chain and sprockets , a 530 setup can be had . I got mine for my 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD off E-Bay at reasonable cost from the U S based website . Easy to find when you use the compatible vehicle feature and do a little research from your computer . The 530 chain is lighter in weight than the standard 630 and if you order the EK ch...ain as I did , it comes in a 9.000 pound tensile strength version which I thought might be appropriate , but possibly a tad excess . If you have never changed a chain and sprockets before , take it to your dealer as this setup comes wit a permanent link . However , if you have the Voice of Experience , it is not a complicated procedure . Good luck and happy hunting Geronimo ! See more

Look , up in the sky ! It's a bird ...... It's a plane ........ No it's Superman ! Great Caesars ' Ghost , getting your bike ready for the new Season can be very tedious . For now , I would just like to stick to cleaning the old sponge foam air filters , such as found on my 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD and many other earlier bikes as well . It is not a complicated process , all you need is a a pair of latex gloves ,a quart of Varsol and a quart of 10W - 40 motor oil , plus either ...a compressor to blow dry or a hair dryer , same purpose - Plus a paint tray or some suitable container to catch the drips . Put the gloves on to protect yourself from the chemicals firstly , saturate the foam filter in Varsol and squeeze it out to remove dirty oil and clean any dirty residue from the filter . Next you are either going to use your compressor and blow dry the filter or your hair dryer , same purpose in a well ventilated area . The finishing touch is to pour some 10W - 40 motor oil onto the filter and blend it into the fabric well , followed by squeezing out the excess oil . Replace the filter to where it goes and just like that you're done like a T V dinner . This is only a complicated as you could possibly make it Ziggy ! See more

Ooooh .Oooooh Child , things are going to be easier . Seems to me even the best of battery chargers can let you down , no warning . I have owned a Battery Tender and a Optimate Tech III . My Brother was the one to find the Battery Tender I gave him was not charging his battery . Sort of an accidental , but fruitful discovery was to reverse polarity momentarily with the Battery Tender on the motorcycle battery itself with Battery Tender unplugged seemed to correct the situation when reconnected normally and plugged in . Same situation with my Optimate Tech III , I believe just last Fall . Same procedure corrected it also , just when you thought you had a dud on your hands . Don't you just love saving money , rather than throwing away expensive equipment ? So Suzie Q , how are you ?

Zip ,bop aluha , zip , bam , boom ! So you bought a maintenance free battery , did you ? Maintenance free batteries are not maintenance free - They require a maintenance charge every 3 months to keep in top form . And your regular wet cell , charge them once per month for the same reason . Don't forget to loosen the cell caps while charging , so the battery can breathe - Tighten when done . Either battery , if it sits 7 days in your bike doing nothing , charge first to avoid burning out your expensive electrical charging system on your bike . Preventative maintenance always pays off in the long run in major dollar savings . And unless you run a battery maintainer such as a Battery Tender daily , I would suggest you follow these steps . All the way to the bank Arnold !

Damn ! I give up ...... patience my ass , I'm going to kill something ! I had an old windscreen on my 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD which I was never satisfied with . It came to me originally with nicotine stains as plain as the nose on your face . It sure looked a might ugly , although I cleaned it up a bit with Meguiars' Ultra Polishing compound and an orbital electric polisher . Not completely satisfied with its' appearance , I tried a 2,000 grit finishing sandpaper and ruined... its' appearance with fine scratches . Back to the drawing board , where I came up with an idea to use Acetone to strip and repair the surface . The acetone removed a layer of scratches , but you have to be quick with a soaked paper shop towel and just once over . A thorough polishing again with the Meguairs' Ultimate Polishing Compound , then Meguiars' Plastic Polish , lastly the orbital polisher after the plastic polish has dried - And to put a final touch up for removing leftovers and fingerprints , Plexxus Plastic Cleaner Spray and a micro - fibre clothe to apply and polish . If you think it's easy , guess again Maestro ! See more

The ink is black ........ . So you're ahead of yourself getting ready for an oil change . What has worked for me and what still works today is to add about 2 ounces of Sea Foam to engine oil in the crankcase , as much as 500 kilometres ahead of draining off the engine oil . Don't be surprised at all if your oil comes out jet black . If you see this , you know you've done good and ahead of this you may have noticed that your compression became better . New oil and a new filter , ready to roll until next service . Bee bop aluha , zip bam boom -DONE !

That'll put the plug in the jug ! Strangely enough , I keep faucet washers as part of my tool kit as they are an important item found in my junk drawer . They have multiple applications when it comes to stopping the effects of vibration on my wheels . I have used faucet washers in the past to stop side covers , such as on my Suzuki GT380 to stay on . There was a threaded screw with knob that I placed a washer behind to keep the knob tight at all times and from vibrating loose . Another application involved my Vetter fairing on my Suzuki GS1000GX cracking to which I used 4 faucet washers to mount the fairing to its' frame - problem solved . If you can find it , we can fix it !

Don't squash that Dwarf , hand me my wallet ! How much sitting between four walls are you capable of standing . You have too much time on your hands to waste sitting idly . Instead of sitting suffering PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) , there is something you can do and maybe save money on Spring repairs . If you go to websites such as E-Bay.com , with a bit of a search , you may be able to find the parts you need , whether you bid on them or outright purchase your items . I ...don't know too many motorcyclists that are in the I don't need nothing category , although it can prove to be an extensive and expensive hobby . This time of year , AKA Winter , is the best time to get the best bargains to be had out there . I just ordered new chains and sprockets for 2 of my bikes , shipped to a Friend at a U S destination which otherwise would have cost me hundreds of dollars locally . Time to get out , get busy and start ordering . Spring is just a spit away , time to bust loose on your hard earned cash . See more

For those about to rock - Or , if your vertically challenged .. ? For some of US , somehow that favorite motorcycle just doesn't fit as good as it should and there is a need to make some changes to our favorite mode of transportation . In the case of my 2008 GSF1250SA Bandit , it is not quite ergonomically compatible with me causing discomfort . Firstly , I added steel mesh braided lines of extra length for the clutch and upper front brake line so I could go to higher han...dlebars . After changing the handlebars for the second time , I went with Daytona Super Bike bars and had to alter the height of the risers to accommodate . In raising the risers , I had to put about 1" thick bronze nuts in place underneath and increase the length of the riser mounting bolts just a tad more for desired effect . This got rid of the strained wrists from leaning on top of them and with an already aftermarket wind screen made riding much more comfortable . And yes Virginia , there is a Santa Claus . See more

Wow , I could do that ! I don't know if any motorcyclists have the same problem as their Cager Brothers when it comes to headlights weathering and turning dim and yellow . If your plastic headlamp cover is weatherized and needs some attention , here's the skinny on that . What you need to clean up this discoloration mess is a bottle of Meguiars Ultimate Polishing Compound and a aerosol can of Plexxus Plastic Cleaner . All you have to do is take a micro fiber clothe and apply small amounts of the Meguiars to the headlight surface and scrub until you feel the surface has gone smooth again . Next with a clean micro fibre clothe , spray the Plexxus directly on the headlight and wipe until it comes out clean - Repeat as necessary . The results will astound you , I am damned sure . Easy come , easy go - Done !

Nice of you to notice - NOT ! I came across an unusual , at least to me anyway , big problem with my airbox on my Suzuki GSF1250 Bandit . I got a little too exuberant tightening the screws which hold the lid down , aided by four square nuts . The nuts pulled through the airbox and the lid could no longer be snugged down securely . After much consideration and thought I came up with a method , rather simple in nature, to complete the task at hand . I trimmed four body pins , found at your local automotive parts jobber , cut with heavy duty scissors into a octagonal or stop sign shape and put a #6 wood screw with Robertson head on the outside of the airbox cover through the airbox body and tightened them snug . Now the lid stays in place on the airbox and I can clean my filter , like nobodies business . Slick Rick to the rescue !

How now , brown cow ? If you own an older bike , such as my 1983 Suzuki GS750ESD , you are bound to run into parts that are obsolete . No guarantees , but sometimes these parts are findable . When you exhaust the parts fiches looking desperately in Canada , look next on the U.S. websites .
