Pekiwewin (2020 acrylic 24 X 48 ) This year I had the most humbling and amazing experience to join Turko and Associates to spend time with and get to know the beautiful people of the Pekiwewin Prayer and Relief Camp on Treaty 6 Land and to help with the Art direction for the release of a painting for the camp to be combined with a documentary by Jeromy Deleff and Jordan Turko. I learned so much and came away from my time there completely changed. This piece was created fo...r the people of Pekiwewin and Treaty 6 Territory to represent the sense of community, hope, love, unity and the fight for justice that was so strong at Pekiwewin. What I witnessed at Pekiwewin has forever changed me for the better. Since the summer of 2020 Pekiwewin simply took the land back and has been operating a community of 300 houseless individuals on Treaty Six territory in the downtown Edmonton neighbourhood of Rossdale for over 100 days, with volunteers saving over 70 individuals from overdoses. They have achieved the unfathomable task of providing a home for First Nations youth, Elders, 2Spirit, Napwewak & Ikswewak who feel they don’t have a home. I had the most humbling experience ever with Jordan Turko and Jeromy Deleff to meet and spend time with the inspiring residents of the camp and to be guided by the guardians of the camp Amiskwaciwaskahikan Ohkichitwawak, Kehteyak, and the Crazy Indian Brotherhood who watched over and protected the camp. Visit pekiwewin.com to learn more. Thank you to Amiskwaciwaskahikan Austin Mihkwaw, the people and volunteers of Pekiwewin the people of the Treaty 6 territory, the Crazy Indian Brotherhood who protected the camp, Grande Chief Billy Morin of Treaty 6, Jordan Turko and Jeromy Deleff with Turko and Associates for this incredible life changing experience. . #treaty6 #treaty6territory #landback #justice #fightforjustice #pekiwewinyeg #pekiwewin #indigenous #art #healing #yeg #artwork #prayer
