Meloney family of North Sydney has been selling footwear to Cape Bretoner’s for 120 years It’s very easy to say that COVID has interrupted many plans of many people around the world. In the retail world, we have faced a huge drop in sales and even the closure of many stores. Our business, Reiker by The Shoe Tree, just had 4 consecutive years of growth. 2020 was supposed to be "THE BANNER" year of growth, mostly because of the cruise business, but COVID surely messed up that ...plan! My business partner and better half Lizz and I were in the early stage process of trying to sell our shoe business. We have reached the point in our lives where we would like to spend more time with our family and our grandchildren. We finally felt that the time had come for us to semi-retire. Even after the events this past year, we're confident that we will find the right person/people to take over our business and continue to look after the footwear needs of Cape Bretoner’s. It’s hard to believe that the Meloney family of North Sydney has been selling footwear to Cape Bretoner’s for 120 years. Over the years, we've operated 5 retail stores - 4 footwear, and one ladies wear store. The Meloney shoe business survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, 2 or 3 recessions, the introduction of shopping malls, internet sales and the effect they had on independent retailers, and now - the COVID-19 crisis. Independent retailers are flexible people. We can endure. Since I am one of the "elders" on Charlotte street, I was recently asked what I thought the future held for Downtown Sydney. I honestly feel that within 5 years, the downtown will be bustling again, because of NSCC moving to the area, and the second cruise ship berth will add new life to the cruise industry - and it will come back. One thing that COVID did was show the importance of small businesses in a community. I believe that small retail will come back strong, rebuilding to make a vital downtown. We already see new owners investing and buying up buildings. We already see new young people on the street. There’s room to grow, so I believe in about 5 to 10 years we'll see a very vibrant downtown. It will be terrific. Lizz and I would love to be part of it, but our time has come, time for a slower pace and more focus on family.
