Today, we recognize the important contributions hunting, trapping, and fishing have made to Canada’s identity, culture, and economy. Long before Samuel de Champ...lain set foot on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, Canada’s Indigenous peoples, the original stewards of this magnificent land, were providing for their families and building their communities by harvesting the fruits of the land and water. The founding of the Hudson Bay Company and the fur trade were integral to the growth and development of the Canada we know today. The importance of hunting, trapping, and fishing are not relegated to Canada’s past; they’re central to the traditions, livelihood, and recreation of hundreds of thousands of Canadians from coast to coast. Hunting, trapping, and angling have an economic footprint of more than $13 billion per year and support over 100,000 jobs. For many Canadians, hunting, trapping, and fishing with their parents and grandparents is how they learn to love and respect the outdoors. For generations, Canada’s hunters, trappers, and anglers have made significant contributions to the preservation of species and habitats. Moving forward, our Party believes they can offer valuable advice on the stewardship of Canada’s wildlife. The Trudeau Liberals cut the Hunting and Angling Advisory Panel, choosing to lose touch with what is happening in our local communities. If elected, a new Conservative government will re-establish this body to ensure hunters and anglers have a seat at the table. We will also reinstate and improve conservation funding, including restoring the National Wetland Conservation Fund. A new Conservative government would also repeal C-71, a bill that punishes law-abiding gun owners. The Conservative Party of Canada will always proudly stand by the country’s hunters, trappers, and anglers, and support their efforts to protect and enhance Canada’s environment.
