Right to Housing Coalition 10.01.2021

**Important call to action. Please share.** This is an important moment in MB Housing politics. There is a new Housing Minister and we have the chance right now to get her attention. Our main concern:... Pallister continues to sell our public housing. This will leave a legacy of poverty and homelessness across our province. Important call to action: 1. Share this post. (This is important, as Facebook won't allow us to do paid boosts since our message is political.) 2. Add your name to our list of supporters via the link below 3. Email the Premier, the new Minister of Housing (Rochelle Squires), and your MLA about your housing concerns. More info here: http://righttohousing.ca/keep-public-housing-public/

Housing is not just right, but essential to public health and equity. Our housing responses must be inclusive of the needs of the community. https://www.policyalternatives.ca//fast-facts-indigenous-l

Urgent Action Needed to Protect Renters in Manitoba! COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting people living with low incomes and without housing. Help support them now by telling the Manitoba government to take action. What can you do? ... Call or email the Premier of Manitoba and your MLA. Ask them to reinstate the provincial eviction ban to prevent homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Premier: 204-945-3714 or [email protected] Tweet at the Premier of Manitoba (@BrianPallister) and your MLA with the following message: I call on you to reinstate the eviction ban to prevent homelessness and avoid a humanitarian/poverty crisis during the pandemic. #mbpoli #EvictionBanMB #kNOwPoverty What's the situation? The Manitoba government put in place an eviction ban in the spring to respond to the pandemic. This ban was lifted in October as infection rates were RISING throughout Manitoba and continue to grow now. Many households are living with reduced incomes as a result of the pandemic making it difficult to keep up with rent payments. The lifting of the eviction ban has led to increased homelessness and deaths. COVID 19 is running rampant among people who are not housed. It’s unclear whether we have enough dedicated isolation spaces for people without homes. Without this capacity more people will be at risk of exposing others to the virus. This is not the time to be evicting people from their homes. We are in this crisis in part because our governments have failed to provide an adequate supply of safe and affordable housing for people with low incomes. Manitoba must act now to prevent things from getting worse. Make Poverty History Manitoba recently released an open letter calling on the Manitoba government to take urgent action supporting those struggling with poverty during the pandemic. Reinstating the provincial eviction ban is one of the actions they are calling for. See letter below. http://www.makepovertyhistorymb.com//Open-Letter-from-MPHM

Winnipeg is under Code Red restrictions due to Covid-19, yet just a month ago the provincial government ended the ban on rental evictions. Where are the protections for tenants now? https://www.theguardian.com//matthew-desmond-us-evictions-

"Look at the levels of housebuilding by councils and private developers in recent decades and one thing is clear: we have only ever built enough houses when the state has been a significant part of the equation. Private developers will never build enough; in an uncompetitive market, it’s not in their interests to do so. Safe, comfortable and secure homes are like healthcare, schools and the railways: it takes state action to ensure everyone can live in one. It feels ridiculous that the government invests more in building roads than it does in building homes." https://www.theguardian.com//social-housing-britain-afford

"With winter just around the corner, we need an immediate plan to ensure people experiencing homelessness across Manitoba can access warm spaces to stay safe from the cold. We also need the province to step up and provide more social housing and income support for vulnerable Manitobans to prevent further homelessness, poverty and the spread of COVID." https://policyfix.ca//one-hell-of-a-winter-unless-provinc/
