FRIDAY NOVEMBER 13th FOR THE FOOD BANK
If you're wondering why you don't see Oscar winning films like Parasite and Jojo Rabbit at The Rio Theatre even after they've been playing at Cineplex for months? The answer is... because Cineplex has a monopoly on the market that has gone unchecked for years and it's crushing indie theatres across Canada. We have written a petition to demand that Cineplex stop their bullying tactics by dictating the market and blocking independent theatres from booking films with distributors. We also ask that the Canadian Competition Bureau step in to enforce the Competition Act that prevents this kind of monopoly from continuing. Please show your support for indie theatres and sign and share our petition today!
This Friday! Experience Japanese master filmmaker YasujirĂ´ Ozu's thrilling 1933 silent gangster tale DRAGNET GIRL with an original score performed live by ambient/electric trio Coupler. www.riotheatretickets.ca
"Scream, Queen! reaches into the fabulous recesses of queer horror fans, filmmakers, and academics to offer a well-rounded and humorous accounting of the queer cult classic." (IndieWire) Screening November 23 at the #RioGrind. www.riotheatre.ca
This Saturday! SCREAM, QUEEN! MY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (Roman Chimienti & Tyler Jensen, 2019 / 100 mins) Scream, Queen! examines the infamous homoerotic subtext and the special place the film holds in the Nightmare franchise as well as the gay film canon. Partly in thanks to evolving social mores, Nightmare on Elm Street 2 which was considered controversial at the time of its release is now being looked back upon with a new appreciation and fondness by horror aficionados and fans of the series.
