Falling Rock in Naramata by @sanders_green_architecture This project is a response to a shared interest between client, architect, and builder in respecting the natural landscape. Accessed from the top, the property has a small buildable area between a rock bluff and an environmentally sensitive protected area. The constraints of the topography allowed only a small footprint, so the team developed an idea of cantilevering the living room over the edge of the slope. This stra...tegy allowed the building to find the best views toward the south around a pine grove. A structural steel and CLT approach was used to achieve the cantilever and have less impact on the rocks, mosses, and grasses that inhabit the hillside. Wildfire interface guidelines helped drive the exterior material palette.
