Born in Montreal of a wealthy merchant family, James Wilson Morrice studied at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall but did not practice law. Instead, he went to Europe to become a painter. Acquired in 1937 from Galerie Allard in Paris, Le Porche de l’eglise San Marco is a pochades, a painting on a small wooden panel that could be carried in a pocket.
