River City Mushrooms 16.11.2020

Around three weeks ago, a few old oyster mushroom grow kits were placed outdoors in a variety of environments here in the city to see how each would fare. As of this writing, each block of substrate has yielded a fresh crop of mushrooms after only being watered once: on the first the day it was brought outdoors. Despite a few days of some unseasonably cold weather (3-4 C overnight) last week, this flush of black pearl oyster mushrooms is still looking great. This is also my ...first attempt to grow this variety outdoors, and I estimate that this cluster will be ready to harvest in a couple of days. Sawdust based mushroom grow kits, after yielding once or twice indoors, can be placed in a shady, protected spot outdoors and watered. With any luck over the course of a week o so they will often produce at least one more crop of mushrooms before wearing themselves out completely. This is a great strategy that helps you get the most out of your mushrooms! #mushroomgrowing #mushroomcultivation #rivercitymushrooms #oystermushroom #blackpearlkingoyster #mycology #homegrown #mushroomgrowkit #mushroomkit #mushroomgardening #manitobamushrooms #winnipegmushrooms

A small but healthy third flush on this shiitake kit that first produced back in June. A bit more patience is required with shiitake as they’re slower to mature and start producing but are generally very easy going and adapt well to life indoors. We’re considering doing a small run of exclusively shiitake (and possibly some reishi) grow kits sometime around the winter solstice. Let us know if you’d like one (or a couple) and depending on what sort of interest there is we may ...decide to go for it. #mushroomgrowing #mushroomcultivation #rivercitymushrooms #shiitake #shiitake #lentinulaedodes #mycology #homegrown #mushroomgrowkit #mushroomkit #manitobamushrooms #winnipegmushrooms

I am still in absolute disbelief the morning after. Yesterday morning was one of the most bountiful foraging field days I have had to date. Ever. I am also still over the moon about discovering two new species for me in Manitoba: wild porcini and the elusive eastern Matsutake: Tricholoma magnivelare. These firm, hefty mushrooms are the quintessential definition of an adult Easter egg hunt. Their buff white caps just barely peek above the surface of the pine duff from which th...ey grow, making spotting them almost impossible unless you are basically right next to them. In Matsutake land one must tread lightly and place each and every step with care. The quiet and solace of these pine forests is an absolute sensory delight compared with the constant underlying rumble and vibrations of the city and it wasn’t until I was out there that I once again realized how much I need my dose of forest time. Harvesting and gathering mindfully is a potent medicine even before what you have chosen to gather makes it into the larder or your frying pan. As summer wanes and the bounty of the growing season closes, there is always an encore of extravagant offerings and gifts from the woods. Don’t let this most wonderful time of year pass you by. Autumn is a rich, savoury delight. #mushroomforaging #foraging #mushroomforaging #wildmushrooms #manitobamushrooms #matsutake #trichalomamagnivelare #rivercitymushrooms #autumn #mushlove #mushlife

Although our main growing season may be coming to an end in a few short weeks, the autumn mushroom season is just getting started. Many wild and cultivated species, such as oyster (Pleurotus spp.), lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) and shiitake (Lentinula edodes) all tend to prefer warm days and cool nights with regular rainfall. This pearl oyster grow kit lay dormant all summer long, refusing to produce indoors despite our best efforts. All it needed, it seems, was to be plac...ed outside among some plants in a shady spot and watered a couple times. Within a week of being introduced to the outside world, these picture perfect mushrooms burst forth from this stubborn block in an extraordinary display of mycological brilliance. It was quite the unexpected treat and thrill to once again be caught off guard by the resiliency and strength of mushrooms. When in doubt, and if you have some outdoor space available to you, fruiting your mushroom blocks outdoors may yield fantastic results that are difficult (although certainly not impossible) to achieve indoors. Lastly, Lots of love goes out to @moth.mullein who on top of acting in as an ideal mushroom model exercises a great deal of patience putting up with and encouraging my enthusiasm for growing and teaching. Thank you for helping to keep me grounded, from working myself thin and ensuring I eat more than 1.5 meals per day. #rivercitymushrooms #winnipegmushrooms #manitobamushrooms #mushroomgrowkits #growkit #oystermushrooms #Pleurotus #homegrown #mycology #mushroomgrowing #mushroomcultivation #communitygarden #mushlove #mushlife

Many thanks go out to @sarahtonin___ for having the patience to work with me on a design for RCM. Couldn't be more pleased with how this turned out. I'll just say for now that there might be some merch in the future.. #rivercitymushrooms #winnipegmushrooms #manitobamushrooms... #mycology #mushroomgrowing #mushroomcultivation See more
