It’s Small Business Saturday! It is more important than ever to stay put and shop local. We have so many great small businesses to support in Pictou County this holiday season! This weekend was our annual staff Medical Emergency and CPR training! Thankfully, we don’t have to put these skills to use very often (...knocking on wood ) so it’s always good to have a refresher! Happy Halloween from the River Hill Dental team! Bizzy is dressed and excited for the trick-or-treaters! Our new routines of changing in and out of PPE all day hampered our costume game this year, but not our spirits! We all love a little treat, but a few tips to keep in mind: ... chocolate is gentler for teeth than other sweets, because it melts away! hard candies can fracture teeth, braces, and fillings! chewier candies like gummies and toffee stick to the teeth, allowing the ‘sugar bugs’ to linger, increasing risk of decay. did you know that some sour candies have the same pH as battery acid!? Regular dental visits, with fluoride treatments to keep teeth strong, are important to keep teeth healthy and catch problems early. Most importantly, make sure your little ghouls have a good brush and floss before bed time to remove those sugar bugs! Have fun, and be safe!

Happy 3rd Birthday to this delightful pup! Bizzy is definitely the fan favorite when it comes to the River Hill Dental team! We are so lucky to have such a fantastic office dog, who brings so much joy to those around her! Her sweet and gentle nature is such a great addition to the atmosphere of our clinic. ... Shout out from Dr. Hill for some notable Pictou County features this week! A few days ago, the United Way of Pictou County celebrated 60 years of serving our community! Dr. Hill is proud to be a canvasser on this year’s campaign and was chair of the Young Leaders of the Way program for many years. Congrats to all of those involved over the past six decades for reaching this amazing milestone. Friday is Big Brothers Big Sisters Day in Pictou County! Stop by MacGregor Ave... from 10-2 for goodies, food truck treats, and to learn more about the impact of BBBS. This is another organization near and dear to Dr. Hill, who volunteered as a Big Sister for several years, and was honoured with their Community Mentor award in 2017. AND, this week also marked the anniversary of the landing of the Ship Hector, on September 15th in 1773, which made Pictou the Birthplace of New Scotland. Dr. Amanda’s class was in Grade Primary when the keel for the replica was laid, and then were the Grade 12 class at Pictou Academy when it was launched! A special part of our local heritage. Lots to commemorate in Pictou County this week!

Thinking of all of the teachers, students, parents, and support staff heading back to school today! (That was one lonnnng March Break!) As for the uncertainty, the new PPE, routines turned upside down, monitoring symptoms closely, lots of change... and alllll the butterflies that of course come along with it... we get it. It is tough, but take it from us, it does get easier! Be patient and be kind and be adaptable. There’s no playbook for all of this, and things will c...hange as you learn more about what works for you and your environment. Most importantly - keeping our schools safe starts with keeping our communities safe. Keep up the great work, Pictou County!

Our River Hill Dental family is growing... in more ways than one! During the Covid shutdown, we missed out on watching Michelles baby bump grow! She is expecting very soon, and while we sure will miss her while shes off with baby, we are thankful to have some awesome hygienists to work with to keep your smiles healthy and clean. ... Traffic notice! We were surprised upon our arrival this morning with construction blocking both our parking lot entrance and Blair Street. Very happy to get some patching done on busy Stellarton Road, but we didnt get a chance to inform todays patients about this modification to their arrival! ... So FYI: Traffic is going to be slowwww, and youll have to access our office by turning toward the bridge, then coming down by Clyde Street (passing Rotary Park by the river) and heading up the hill to enter the steep driveway from Blair Street. It is very important to us to have a safe environment both for our patients and our team. So, we are taking numerous precautions and abiding by our recommended guidelines, especially when it comes to making your visit as contact-free as possible. (Other than your treatment of course; cant do that from 6 feet away! ) For you, the patient, that includes the following: prescreening before your visit and at the door community mask wearing while moving throughout the clinic ... being greeted at the door for entry, hand hygiene, and reducing touched surfaces minimizing contact by reduced people in the building, limited use of the waiting room and washroom, encouraging non-cash payments, and abiding by physical distancing when moving through the clinic This is in addition to extra PPE, enhancing our already-stringent infection control, and other modifications to the office to lessen the risk of COVID-19 spread. Did you know those in the dental industry are considered highest at risk at work, due to our proximity to respiratory droplets? The last few weeks have been challenging but everyone is adapting well. We are encouraging everyone to wear a mask to show RESPECT for others (for those who are immunocompromised, for those who are inside around you, for those whose workplace you are entering) and PROTECT the people youre near, (which protects our community overall) by keeping your germs to yourself! Hiiiii from hyyyygiene! We are excited that regular care, including a dental cleaning, can now resume in Nova Scotia! There were 450+ cleaning appointments alone missed at our clinic in the last few months, and our hygiene department is growing and evolving so we can catch up!... As per the provincial guidelines, the next two weeks will be dedicated to individuals with emergencies and urgent problems. There was not a day that went by during the closure that Dr. Hill didnt hear from someone with a dental issue - please be patient as we address this long list of emergencies, and please let us know if you need to be added to it! We look forward to getting everyone scheduled and seen, and to get those smiles healthy again!

Today is an exciting day in Nova Scotia! Re-opening of businesses like restaurants, salons, and many health professions can begin! We have been working hard at getting the office ready, and will be re-opening this MONDAY, June 8th, at 8am! Please note that for the first few weeks of June, as per our protocols, it will be emergency care only. Also, we love that our location has been perfect for welcoming people as they pass by, to 'pop in' and say hello or book an appoint...ment. We have lots of updates about our new operational guidelines to share with you this week. But today - Black Out Tuesday - is about muting, listening, learning, and making space to hear black voices in our communities. Its overdue.

I had an early start to the day today! Our protocols came out late last night, so this morning I hopped out of bed, eager to sit at my laptop with my morning latte and start reading! Then had meetings at the office with each of the girls, to start getting fitted for our PPE and start putting this plan into action. ... Im so excited to get back to work - we know we are needed by many! Please be patient as we prepare for the road ahead - there will be some changes, but our high standards and commitment to quality care will remain top priority. Breaking News! Premier McNeil and Dr. Strang just announced Nova Scotia dental offices (and many others who were mandated closed) are able to begin operations as of June 5th! That said, we have still not been given our new protocols and guidelines, and we know it will not be back to 'business as usual' as described in this article. River Hill Dental is not yet booking appointments, and will be prioritizing those with emergencies. Glad to have some news today though! ... Dr. Hines has been spending time during the pause spreading joy with her incredible paintings! She has auctioned off some of her works over the last few months, raising money for the Pictou West Food Bank and the local womens shelter in Amherst, Autumn House. This beautiful piece is going to an excited Dr. Amanda. ... It is always said how dentistry requires artistic talents, and as you can see, Dr. Laura has that in spades!

Anyone else feeling like Bizzy on this gloomy day? Little does she know, we have some news! Yesterday, our dental board met with Dr. Strang to review back-to-work protocols for Nova Scotia dental offices. So that means, we will soon have more information on the tweaks youll see in our clinic, post-Covid. As always, there will be a strong emphasis on excellent infection control, and outstanding patient care. ... Looking forward to seeing you again ..soon!

Speaking of awesome moms, we are very thankful for Dr. Amandas mother, who has spent hours and hours in recent weeks sewing surgical headcovers for our team! Fittings were done over FaceTime! As we prepare to return to work with some new protocols and PPE shortages (anyone have any N95s!? ), were pleased to have these colourful additions! ... (Patients of ours will recognize how theyll match our regular masks nicely! ) Still no official word on when we will get to re-open, but as Nova Scotia COVID-19 cases are dwindling, we are watching closely as Dr. Strangs plan is developed. Happy Mothers Day to all the caregivers, and to all the protectors, and to all those that gave birth to or gave rise to beings on this earth! There are so many ways to define mothering, and today, we celebrate them all! Heres to the mums - thank you!

After toothaches (#1 thing we receive calls about right now), these are the next three things we are asked about most frequently: 1 Even though youre not open, can I still get a 2019 statement for my income tax? * Yes! Just let us know, we can send it electronically or pop it in the mail. ... 2 I owe money on my account; youre not open, but can I pay you somehow? I know times are tough for small businesses right now, so want to help! * Yes! Thank you to everyone that recognizes that small independent businesses in our community are struggling; we appreciate your support. We accept e-transfers at [email protected] and would be happy to confirm any outstanding balance amounts. 3 When will you re-open!? * We wish we knew the answer to this one! Looks like itll still be weeks away, here in Nova Scotia. Dr. Hill has been reading up on protocols from around the world as dentists prepare to re-open. At this point, other provinces and countries are easing back in by seeing emergencies and urgencies only. Likely will still be a while before regular cleanings and fillings are allowed. For now, we will continue to take care of patients remotely. The only in-person dental treatment according to law in NS right now is extractions related to life threatening dental infections, at several designated emergency clinics (our closest being in Halifax). Once again, Nova Scotia is grieving, as the search ends for the lost Canadian Forces helicopter. This one hits hard in our community, with the loss of Captain Brenden MacDonald; his parents home is just across the street. Thankful we are now allowed to get outside a bit more - some deep breaths of fresh air are needed!

Today is National Physician Day. Now more than ever, we appreciate the hard-working doctors in our community. Thats why River Hill Dental donated boxes and boxes of surgical masks to local docs, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare workers as soon as we were mandated to close. Local family doc Dr. Brad MacDougall looks good in Dr. Hills pink masks, right!?

This snowy day was made for snuggles. Hope everyone is feeling the Nova Scotia love these days.

On this grey morning when our hearts are feeling just as dreary, we want to acknowledge someone who brings sunshine to the darkest of days. Jan, youre amazing, thank you for all you do!
