Looking for an alternative to the high accommodation prices in Whistler this winter season? Tenting in the winter isnt as difficult as one might think as long as you prepare for the conditions. With the appropriate equipment and a good plan, camping in the winter can be just as enjoyable as the summer. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Bring a sled, toboggans arent just for the kids, they also double as a great way to carry your supplies back to your campsite. Dont fo...rget a shovel to pack down the snow for an even sleeping area, to dig out a fire pit and to help collect snow if melting for water. A foam mat under your winter grade sleeping bag will not only block the moisture and cold but will also double as a seat for those nightly campfires. Remember the importance of ventilation, a little cold air in the tent is better than condensation and store any wet clothes in a sack to prevent extra moisture. When deciding what to wear remember that clothing made of cotton will absorb moisture and trap the cold next to your skin, look for synthetic fabrics or better yet stock up on merino wool to keep you warm. Choose waterproof footwear to keep your toes dry, and use hand and foot warmers to keep them extra toasty. For those with cold feet, throw a warmer in the bottom of your sleeping bag. Dont forget to double up on socks and sleep with a pair of mitts or gloves on for added protection. Although it may be tempting to tuck your head inside your sleeping bag, this can produce unwanted moisture, instead sleep with a hat or balaclava on. A trip to the toilets twenty minutes before bed and then once again right before climbing into your sleeping bag will not only prevent middle of the night bathroom runs but it also gives you a chance to get the blood pumping. Some quick jumping jacks or light cardio warms up the body so when you crawl into your sleeping bag, itll trap the extra heat. Take advantage of the lifted fire bans and treat yourself to a smore or two. Calories from fatty and sugary foods will translate to fuel for your body during the night, sounds like a good enough excuse to toast some marshmallows to me!
