Woodstock Police Force introduces newest members Abby Derrah of Florenceville-Bristol and Josef Clements of Bedell hired as casual police officers By Jim Dumville... Woodstock council gave unanimous approval to the addition of two new members to the Woodstock Police Force. Josef Clements and Abby Derrah, accompanied by Chief Gary Forward, attended the council meeting held Dec. 21 at the AYR Motors Centre. Clements and Derrah, along with Ryan Paul, joined the force in July, working as cadet constables until Sept. 26, when they returned to the Atlantic Police Academy to attend graduation. Forward praised all three cadets, saying they served the force and the community well. He told council members he welcomes Derrah and Clements as casual officers. I just have to say that Josef and Abby performed admirably. They had a great summer. We asked a lot of them, and they responded in kind without a complaint, he said. With the recently completed budget providing space for hiring two casuals, Forward said the force was happy to offer the positions to Derrah and Clements. Mayor Art Slipp told the young officers, welcome aboard. Derrah, who grew up in Florenceville-Bristol, attended Carleton North High School. Clements, originally from England, lived the last 10 years in Bedell. Teenage artist returns to Creek Village’s Young Artist Showcase Hannah Pawsey’s work will be featured for the fourth year By Jim Dumville... While only 16 years of age, Hannah Pawsey is a veteran artist and already familiar with having her work on public display. For the fourth year, Pawsey will showcase her paintings at the Creek Village Gallery and Cafe as its Young Artist of the Month. "I have loved drawing and doing art since I was three years old," Pawsey said in her bio, accompanying her selection as Creek Village's Young Artist for December. The gallery is excited to present her work throughout the month, says Paul Twyford of Creek Village. He said the gallery hung her art on Nov. 29 and already sold one piece the following day. Twyford said he and other partners at Creek Village enjoy the front-row seat watching a talented young artist grow before their eyes. "It's fun and fascinating - watching Hannah develop her art since she was first featured in Creek Village Gallery as a 12-year-old," he said. "We could see even then she had an artistic eye and the ability to express herself with her art." Pawsey said her favourite paint mediums are watercolours and acrylics, but she also enjoys using alcohol markers and ink pens to draw and cartoon. "The main themes I like to incorporate into my art are animals and scenic landscapes," she said. The teenager doesn't limit her artistic and creative outlets to painting. She also plays piano and guitar, expands her creative endeavours to singing and songwriting, photography and creative writing. "My hope for the future is to be an author and illustrator of children's books where I can best utilize both my art and writing skills," Pawsey said. Pawsey's art is on display throughout December on Creek Village Gallery and Cafe's Young Artist Spotlight Wall, sponsored by Greg MacPherson of Manulife Securities in Woodstock. See more

Gymnastics coach, young golfer garner provincial honours Jayne Geddes, Brayden Sappier earn Sport NB Awards By Andrew McCormick... In an awards ceremony on Dec. 4, Sports NB recognized a pair of Carleton County sports leaders' contributions to the local sporting scene. Gymnastics pioneer Jayne Geddes and young golfing sensation Brayden Sappier earned provincial awards during the virtual awards ceremony. Geddes, the RVG founder, head coach and club director, became the 2020 Konica Minolta Sport NB Female Coach of the Year. "I'm honoured to receive this award in a year, which has forced us to think outside the box but made us stronger in so many ways, said Geddes. "I'm fortunate to do what I love every day." Geddes thanked RVG's athletes, parents, coaching staff and administrators. "I'm thankful for their support as well as the community's support," she said. The club has enjoyed phenomenal growth since its founding 12 years ago. "I'm excited to see what the future holds for RVG," Geddes said. Executive Director of SNB Darcy McKillop said Geddes' success "in elevating athletes to the elite level plays a key part in qualifying for the award," noting the success of gymnast Evie Astle to reach the national elite level in the sport. The award show also recognized Sappier for both his golfing skills and contributions to the sporting community as a golf and hockey coach. The former Woodstock First Nation resident became the 2020 New Brunswick Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Male Athlete of the Year. Sappier won six successive gold medals in the golf competition at the National Aboriginal Games since 2014 and was in the field at the 2019 Canadian Junior Golf Championship held at Covered Bridge Golf and Country Club in Hartland. Sports NB also praised Sappier's leadership skills as a volunteer hockey coach in Woodstock Minor Hockey and a junior golf instructor at Woodstock Golf and Curling Club. Now living and working in Moncton, Sappier credited his parents, Melissa and Shawn Sappier, for his success. "My Mom and Dad have always supported me, as well as my girlfriend, Reese Mangum," he said. See more

On 30 November 2020, the Woodstock Police Force responded to a local business in regards to a customer who refused to leave the store following repeated request... to wear a mask in accordance with the GNB State of Emergency Mandatory Order Orange Phase. Although it is not customary for the agency of jurisdiction to comment on a matter under investigation or before the courts, it is necessary that the Woodstock Police respond to community inquiry related specifically to why we responded. The Town of Woodstock, like many communities within and outside New Brunswick, is facing a pandemic. Covid 19 has taken lives around the world and New Brunswick has not been immune to this tragedy. In an effort to keep New Brunswickers safe, a State of Emergency has been declared and supported by Mandatory Order. The Woodstock Police Force believes in education, information, and communication and has repeatedly requested visitors and citizens alike to please ensure that we do everything we can to keep one another safe. We respect that not all citizens agree with the enforcement aspect and for those who do not, we encourage you to engage in the court process in questioning and determining the validity of any enforcement interaction encountered. Our priority has and continues to be the public safety of our community and we respectfully thank all of you for your patience, understanding, and partnership in responding effectively to this pandemic. Gary Forward, Chief of Police Woodstock Police Force

RCMP seize drugs and guns, arrest man in Glassville 37-year-old recently moved from Ontario River Valley Sun... RCMP arrested a 37-year-old man and seized drugs and several guns following an investigation in Glassville late last month. In a press release issued Dec. 2, Western Valley Region RCMP said officers responded to a call shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 26 to a home on Route 107 in Glassville. Once on scene, the release said, police discovered a loaded sawed-off shotgun and what they believed to be methamphetamine pills. The RCMP arrested at the scene a 37-year-old man who recently moved to the area from Ontario. The release said RCMP returned to the same residence the following day to execute a search warrant. During the search, police seized a quantity of methamphetamine pills and powder. In addition to the sawed-off shotgun from the day before, police said officers secured 10 more firearms, including prohibited weapons. Police also found prohibited magazines, various types of ammunition and a conducted energy weapon. The RCMP said the 37-year-old man was released from custody and scheduled to appear in Woodstock provincial court on March 23, 2021, adding the investigation remains ongoing. In the release, the RCMP said the public plays an essential role in reducing, preventing, and solving crime, including the trafficking of illegal drugs. It asked anyone with information about, or who suspects, illicit drug activity in their neighbourhood to contact their local police. Police also noted people could anonymously provide information through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by downloading the secure P3 Mobile App, or by Secure Web Tips www.crimenb.ca. Church bringing Christmas story to life with special event Drive-through Living Nativity Experience to offer ‘Journey Through Bethlehem’ River Valley Sun... The Woodstock Baptist Church will bring the story of Christmas to life this year by offering a "Journey Through Bethlehem" at the site of its soon-to-be-completed church on L.P. Fisher Lane. WBC Senior Pastor, Rev. Craig Woodcock, described the planned drive-through Living Nativity Experience in a press release. "The message of Christmas will come to life in our Living Nativity with 10 scenes presenting the circumstances around the birth and life of Jesus Christ," he said. Noting the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic means constant change and restrictions to ensure the community's health and safety, Woodcock said many traditional Christmas events would not occur this year. "This has forced the church to think outside the box and seek opportunities to bring the Christmas message of hope to our community," said Woodcock. He said "Journey Through Bethlehem" will occur at the new church building site, 110 LP Fisher Lane, on Dec. 5 and 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. Entrance to the drive-through event will be off LP Fisher Lane, with the exit onto Main Street. While the "Journey Through Bethlehem" is free of charge, donations will be accepted for the Upper River Valley Hospital Foundation (URVHF). With the Upper River Valley Hospital serving a catchment population of 45,000, the URVHF supports a broad community. The foundation works to secure funds for special medical equipment and treatment programs offered at the local hospital within the scope of acute-care services approved by the Horizon Health Network. It aims to elevate the patient-care experience and enhance staff and physicians' services by providing up-to-date equipment, tools, technology, and training. "Because it is the mission of Woodstock Baptist to love and care for the community, they felt the URVHF was a cause worthy of support because any and all gifts will truly be used to benefit our greater community," said Rev Woodcock. The Senior Pastor also noted the special bond that ties WBC's new location to the region's medical community. "The new WBC Church facility is on the site of the former Carleton Memorial Hospital, a place where people came to receive physical healing and will now be able to come and find spiritual healing," said Woodcock. For further information, go to www.woodstockbaptist.ca or call (506) 324-8020. Rev. Woodcock said plans for the event are subject to change should NB Health adjust Region 3 Zone from yellow to orange or red. He said the event would follow NB Public Health guidelines and recommendations regarding Covid 19 restrictions.

Florenceville Rotary takes annual auction online While they had to skip dinner, Rotarians thrilled with support of donors and bidders to make virtual event a success By Carol Brennan,... Rotary member Many service groups must improvise when it comes to fundraising during Covid-19. The Florenceville Rotary Club is no exception. It decided to hold its annual fall auction as an online event. For the first time, having 160 supporters gather for a catered supper and an evening of friendly bidding was not possible. With Sunset Auction Sales Co. Ltd's assistance, Florenceville Rotary auctioned off almost 200 items between Nov. 10 to 13. Club president, Barb O'Donnell, remarked that it was amazing how many bidders participated. People from as far away as Point Lepreau and Stanley were successful bidders and made the trip to Florenceville-Bristol to pick up the items they purchased. While club members missed the social aspect of bringing the community together for dinner and live auction, all are grateful for the online auction's tremendous support. Visit Florenceville Rotary Club's Facebook page for a list of donors. Without the generous donations of more than 100 companies and individuals, the auction would not have been possible. These donations allow the club to fund community services that focus on health, literacy, youth and the elderly, and international endeavours such as the eradication of polio. Zone 1 (Moncton region) and Zone 3 (Fredericton region) will return to the Yellow level effective midnight tonight. Public Health supports the move that has bee...n measured against all risks and the declining case load in both regions and high levels of public adherence to restrictions limiting the spread of COVID-19. Other Public Health recommendations include Zone 2 (Saint John region) remaining at the Orange alert level for the time being, as there are still a number of active cases in this zone and the risk of transmission or outbreaks remains high. Public Health will continue to monitor progress in this region in the hope of returning Zone 2 to the Yellow alert level as soon as possible. The danger of further COVID-19 infections has not gone away, we have not reduced the risk to zero, said Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer of health. Yellow means ‘caution.’ It is not an invitation to go full speed ahead into life as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. Recovery level rules are available online. In the Yellow level, Public Health measures and guidelines must still be followed. This includes wearing a mask in most indoor public places. For residents in areas currently at the Yellow level, including those who are returning to the Yellow level tonight, I urge you to continue to take precautions and be mindful and careful, said Premier Blaine Higgs. Recent events have reminded us how quickly our situation can change. Wearing masks and limiting the people we are in contact with is making a difference. That is why we must continue to do both, even during the holiday season. New cases Public Health reported four new cases of COVID-19 today, as follows: one individual 19 and under in Zone 1 (Moncton region); one individual 60 to 69 in Zone 2 (Saint John region); one individual 90 and over in Zone 2 (Saint John region); and one individual 60 to 69 in Zone 4 (Edmundston region). All of these cases are self-isolating and under investigation. The number of confirmed cases in New Brunswick is 534 and 445 have recovered. There have been seven deaths, and the number of active cases is 82, with two cases currently in the hospital, including one in intensive care. As of today, 133,087 tests have been conducted. Details on cases and testing can be found on the GNB website. Mobile and most browsers: bit.ly/2BmLpeD IE users: bit.ly/2VsD1RV
