The rinks at the Riverview Community Centre are now open and ready for skating! Here are some important reminders: Public health orders are still in effect when using the ice. No team practices, games, competitions, or otherwise organized activities.... There is no bathroom access, and skate changing must happen outside. We will be keeping the rink lights on until 10PM each night. Please respect the nearby residents and do not skate after the lights are off. At this time, there will be no ice bookings or designated hours for family skating. We will flood a pleasure rink beside the ice rinks soon. There will be no pucks or sticks permitted on the pleasure rink. The outdoor rinks are skate at your own risk. Anyone who is not following public health orders may be fined. The Riverview Community Centre is NOT liable for skaters who are not following public health orders. Check out our latest community news post for more information. https://riverviewcc.ca/rink-update-dec-22/

Age-Friendly Riverview is a small committee of Riverview residents aiming to initiate programs and services for older adults to facilitate healthy, happy ageing-in-place. Alleviating loneliness and building community connections are especially important aspects of age-friendliness. Finding ways for older adults to engage and connect is even more crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 prevents us from connecting as a community as we used to. AFR needs your ideas on how to overcome isolation and support older adults. Keith Taylor started the Children’s Garden thinking the front of the Club could use some colour, and it’s since grown to become an important landmark for both kids and grown-ups. The small garden full of flowers is designed with children in mind. The gate to the small fence has an exaggerated handle, and a small path leads to a seat with a sign reading, Let your spirit smile sit awhile. A second sign reads, A good flower garden is like Christmas every day but without the s...now. Every Thursday during the summer a group of about six to thirteen kids from the daycare would come with their leaders to sit in the garden and listen to Keith’s storytelling. "The Riverview Community Club commenced with an ice rink, field and a railway boxcar in which to change your skates. In 1948 the boxcar was replaced with a new yellow stucco building. Riverview Community Club had free skating and hockey rinks with teams in peewee, playground, midget and juvenile. The boys played hockey and the girls figure skated. The kids skated until our toes were numb; when we couldn’t feel our toes any more, it was time to go in, loosen the laces and pou...nd our feet a bit. Our fingers developed calluses from tying and untying laces." The Riverview Rowdies bowling league used to hold an annual banquet at Park Alleys, but this year that wasn’t possible. Instead of spending money on the banquet, $1000 was split between the community center and Winnipeg Harvest. Find out how the league got its start and where it's going here, https://riverviewcc.ca/riverview-rowdies-bowling-blog/

Running a large-scale indoor public garage sale was a challenge this year, but one our volunteers were ready to face. This time around the garage sale managed to raise over $3500. The sale was as big as ever, with items being collected as early as March. After several concentrated months of donations, and a week of busy set up, the sale was ready to begin. People lined up down the bock, waiting for over an hour for a chance to be one of only eight allowed in the building at a... time. Learn about how our volunteers pulled it off here, https://riverviewcc.ca/garage-sale-success/

Riverview has lost hundreds of trees in recent years, and many more are slated to be removed due to increased disease and pests. A new community group, Trees Riverview, was formed last spring by concerned residents to address this threat to our community tree canopy. The group has received a grant for $14,441 for a tree planting project in Riverview. The project will cover the costs of hiring a contractor to purchase, plant, maintain and water 20-25 boulevard trees for two years. Planting is expected to take place in spring 2021.
