Say hi to our Sulawesi Forest Turtle Blinky! This freshwater turtle species lives on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. Little is known about this rare critically endangered species first discovered in 1995. We do know is that they only lay 1-2 eggs in each clutch whereas other freshwater turtle species lay between 30-50 eggs in a single clutch. At the Zoo we have had successful hatchlings in 2014, 2016, and 2020! #ClosedButCaring #BringingTheZooToYou #Sulawesi #Turtles #AmazingAnimals

Say hello to Polly our Chestnut-fronted Macaw and our Green-winged Macaw, Gomez. Macaws are very intelligent and respond well to interactive training. Training helps reduce the stress of health check-ups and makes them more fun! Here you can see both Macaws are eager present their wingspans to the zookeeper. They can live up to 60-80 years in captivity, so mental and physical exercise along with routine health checks are very important! #AmazingAnimals #macaws #training #ClosedButStillCaring #BringingTheZooToYou - mm

Meet Iggy our Green Iguana! The Green Iguana is also known as the Common Iguana, native to Mexico, Caribbean Islands, Central and South America. This species can vary in colour which is caused by age, temperature, breeding season, mood or health. As a defence mechanism, Green Iguanas can autotomize, which means they can drop their tail to escape predators. Their tail will grow back within a year, however, it will not grow to be the same length as before! #NationalIguanaAwarenessDay #ClosedButStillCaring #BringingTheZooToYou

Happy Meerkat Monday! These are our Slender Tailed Meerkats! They are 45 cm (20 inches) in length and average around 1kg (2.2 lbs)! In the wild meerkats feed on insects, spiders and snails but their diet can also include ground nesting birds and their eggs, and lizards. An interesting fact is that they have a resistance to scorpion and snake venom because they often prey on these animals. We use a variety of tools and techniques to encourage play, exercise or typical behaviors like foraging. At the Zoo, Meerkats benefit from different forms of enrichment including tastes, smells and sounds!

Here is our African spurred tortoise Bob. The African spurred tortoise is the third largest species of tortoise in the world! Tortoises are herbivories and their diet consist of fibrous grasses and other dessert plants, weeds, flowers and cacti in the wild. Tortoises and turtles are a very old group of species dating back to over 200 million years ago. This species uses its spur shaped scales on the forearms to dig burrows up to 3 meters deep to escape from extreme heat and for protection from predators. #ClosedButStillCaring #BringingTheZooToYou

Happy Saturday from our Eastern Box Turtle Jackson! Box Turtles have a high upper shell and large lower shell which allows the turtle to close its shell and seal its head and limbs safely inside. The Eastern Box Turtle inhabits woodland areas, marshy meadows and brushy grasslands, living close to streams and ponds. They are primarily terrestrial animals but in warmer summer months can be found near the edges of swamps and marshlands to stay cool. Instead of just jumping in a pool to cool off, Eastern Box Turtles will spread saliva over their legs and head to cool down! #TerrificTurtles #ClosedButStillCaring #BringingTheZooToYou

In honour of World Lizard Day, here is picture of one of our African Plated Lizards sun bathing (not actually)! Like all reptiles, they depend on their environment to regulate their body temperature. They will bask in the sun to warm up, and retreat to the shade to cool down. This is referred to as ectothermic. At the Park and Zoo our Plated Lizards use heat lamps to help them stay warm. Plated Lizards are covered in large scales called osteoderms which are scales that have bone in them. They also have huge ears compared to most reptiles. #WorldLizardDay #ClosedButStillCaring #BringingTheZooToYou

The name Archer fish comes from their ability to take down prey by spitting an arch of water at their prey. A powerful shot of water is formed by a special groove in their mouth, once they press their tongues against it, it will shoot water out. This carnivorous fish floats at the surface of the water waiting for their prey. Once their prey is above them, they shoot out their powerful shot of water to knock the insect into the water! It is an incredibly accurate shot of water which can reach up to 1.5m away. They can also jump out of the water to catch their prey! #FantasticFish #ClosedButStillCaring #BringingTheZooToYou

Here is our Capybara Pablo enjoying a cool swim on a hot summer day! The Capybara is the largest rodent in the world, weighing as much as an adult human! The capybara has many features that help it to live their aquatic lifestyle. They can swim with only the nostrils, eyes and ears out of the water because they are placed high on the head. A capybaras body also contains a large amount of fatty tissue, giving it natural buoyancy in water. The Capybara is a strong swimmer and can stay underwater for up to five minutes! #CoolCapybara #ClosedButStillCaring #BringingTheZooToYou

Say hello to our Red-necked Wallabies! Wallabies are interesting because they are marsupials, meaning that their offspring fully develop in their pouch, instead of inside the mothers uterus. When a baby Wallaby is born it is actually only about the size of a jelly bean! The tiny baby then crawls up the mothers leg into her pouch and finishes developing there. Because of this, a mother can actually have three babies growing at a time, one growing in her uterus, one continuing its growth in her pouch and one developed enough to be outside hopping around. Stay tuned for more facts about our #AmazingAnimals! #BringingtheZootoYou #ClosedbutstillCaring

Riverview Park & Zoo 21.02.2020

https://forms.riverviewparkandzoo.ca/Donationsour newest Sulawesi forest turtle hatchling. Sulawesi forest turtles are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, poaching for food, and the illegal pet trade. At Riverview Park and Zoo, we work hard to repopulate the species, one hatchling at a time! It is difficult for the population because usually, turtles will lay many eggs, increasing the chance of survival of offspring. However, Sulawesi forest turtles lay onl...y 1-2 eggs per clutch, making their repopulation rates much slower. We are proud to be one of the few zoos to successfully breed these turtles in North America. This success was made possible by the generous donation of funds for an incubator through the Community Foundation Vital Signs network. Community support through donations makes our success in species survival possible. Say hello to Cassandra and Boomer, our two emus! Did you know emus have unique feathers compared to other birds? Each quill has two feathers attached instead of one. Emus use these feathers to help control their body temperature by fluffing them up based on whether they need to warm up or cool down. The feathers also end up being lighter weight because of this unique feature! For more information on our emus visit our website!#BringingtheZootoYou #ClosedbutstillCaring #amazinganimals

Riverview Park & Zoo 27.01.2020

Training the animals to willingly go onto weight scales is an important part of the routine here at Riverview Park and Zoo. It allows the zoo keepers to notice any changes in their physical health. Training to get on the scales often includes repetition and the use of positive words or whistles to indicate a job well done. Of course success is also reinforced with favourite treats! Here you can see that zookeeper Sharolyn gives Charlotte, the pot bellied pig, apple slices for... getting all four feet up on the scale. Cassandra the emu gets leafy greens as encouragement. Friday our serval is best motivated by steak. Training like this helps to facilitate better health observations, reduces the stress of assessments and ultimately helps to avoid the need for sedation or restraint when providing regular health care. Riverview Park and Zoo remains closed. This Saturday, we are #BringingTheZooToYou with a video of one of our seven bird species: the Wild Turkeys! A defining characteristic of birds are their feathers and wings. Did you know that turkeys have 5000 to 6000 feathers? Turkeys have a long, dark, fan- shaped tail and glossy bronze wings. The male is much larger than the female, and his feathers have areas of red, purple, green, copper, bronze, and gold. Female feathers are duller, in shades of brown and gray. The primary wing feathers on both males and females have white bars. Turkeys can run at speeds up to 40kph (25 mph) and can fly up to 88kph (55 mph)! These birds get along with one of our mammal species and they share an exhibit. Do you know which one? #BeautifulBird #ClosedButStillCaring

We are happy to announce that the Riverview Park and Zoo playground, one of the largest and most diverse playgrounds in the City, will be open to the public on Wednesday July 22nd, 2020 with the following notifications and guidelines for visitors: Due to limited resources and the safety of visitors and staff, all washrooms will remain closed and garbage is carry-in/carry-out. Please plan accordingly and help keep the park clean. The zoo remains closed at this time. This inclu...des the zoo area, all facilities between the gates, amenities and attractions (the zoo, splash pad, gift shop, washrooms, train ride, programs, picnic shelters and facility rentals). Only essential staff are on-site taking care of the 150 animals, 30 exhibits, grounds and facilities. These limited resources mean that we must continue to focus on what is most important, caring for the animals that live here, and keeping them and the staff who care for them safe. #closedbutstillcaring

A Fish known as the Archerfish can be found in our aquarium! This aquatic fish lives in estuaries around mangrove and can live in both salt and freshwater. In the wild archerfish are carnivores feeding on insects, small fish and crustaceans. Here at the Zoo, we feed them crickets to hunt as well as commercial fish food.
