Diwali, the Festival of Lights is only 2 weeks away!!!! From our family we wish everyone a prosperous and successful new year. May Mata Lakshmi's blessing be upon everyone. Diwali is celebrated for 5 days. First day of Diwali falls on October 28th of this year. Dhan Teras marks the official beginning of the festivities. It is considered a very auspicious day as it is the 13th day of Krishna Paksha, the dark fortnight of the month of karthik. As it is an important day in Hin...duism people always hold Lakshmi kuber and Ganesh puja to seek their blessings. Second day of Diwali falls on October 29th. It is called Kali Chaudas or Narak Chaturdarsi. It is also Choti Diwali, the day before Diwali. On this day it is believed that lord Krishna had killed the demon Narkasur and freed the world from his fear. Growing up in Fiji, mothers would always take a diya out on the south side of the house for yama deva and ask for blessings and protection of her family. Third day of Diwali falls on October 30th. The day of Diwali is celebrated by wearing new clothes. Mahalakshmi puja is held in everyone's homes with Ganesha puja. After the prayer diya and candles are lit inside and outside the homes (adults need to supervise their children). Sparkles, firecrackers are also lit with loved ones and neighbors. This day marks unity among families and communities. Fourth day falls on October 31st. This day is Govardhan puja. Growing up in Fiji our families would always cook a vegetarian meal and pray to cows (Gaumata). Cow is sacred to Hinduism as she preserves life. Giving sewa to cow is very auspicious and will bring success and prosperity to ones life. Fifth day of Diwali falls on November 1st. This day is Bhai Dooj (brother day). Brothers visit their sisters homes and celebrate this day together. Sisters cook meals and sweets for her brothers wishing a long, healthy and great life together. Brothers bless their sisters!!! Have a blessed Diwali this year with your loved ones, neighbors and come together as one!!!!! Mahalakshmi Mata bless everyone with success and prosperity.
