Fun weekend with great racing at the Fall Dinghy Regatta! 2 days of solid Dinghy racing in the middle of October with with a bit of everything: rain, sun, high-mid-low winds but lots of smiles! Day 1 of the RNSYS Fall Dinghy Regatta. The weather conditions () made us get creative on how we run races. But despite the rain and cold winds in mid October, we had 31 young sailors, 4 races for each of the 5 classes, home made chilli after races and priceless smiles everywhere! Today was the final day of the Sunday Dinghy Series for September. Every Sunday of September we had 3 or 4 short races for each class and kept scores (except Kennedy Cup weekend). In the Laser, Matthew Stevens took the overall win over 26 boats. In Optis, Baruch Saffer won over 13 Optis. In 420s, Riley & Finlay Macaulay took the win over 7 boats.... Consistency pays off! Now onto the October Sunday Series! 4 Sundays of racing ahead! Everyone is welcome to come race dinghies at 1pm! @canyouthsailing @theyachtsquadron @sailnovascotia @sailcanada

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT Name: Jack Gogan Sport: Sailing ... What is your best sports memory? My best memory comes from my first international regatta. I qualified to represent Canada at the North American Championships in Antigua in July of 2015. I worked hard to prepare but did not know what to expect. The conditions were very challenging, with plenty of wind, large waves and experienced competition. I sailed well, felt in control and responsive, and I won the last race of the regatta. Winning that race in those conditions while representing Canada for the first time was a great feeling and left me with enthusiasm and confidence that I still try and capture when I race. What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome as an athlete? The biggest obstacle I have is the physical distance between my coach and I and competition. I live with my family in Sydney NS but I sail out of RNSYS in Halifax and compete internationally. This means that almost every weekend in the spring and fall, most of the summer, and much of my vacation time from school is spent away from home, either training or racing in Halifax or other locations. I love sailing and racing but I miss time with family and friends. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? Mental performance is as important as physical performance and challenges are really just the best kind of opportunities. Who is your biggest cheerleader? My family. My family sacrifices so much so I can sail at a high performance level but they are my biggest source of support when things get challenging. #AtlanticProud

The safety and well-being of participants, volunteers, staff, visitors and the community at large continue to be the first priority for the CORK Board of Direct...ors. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the regattas that were scheduled for August, that is: CORK International Optimist Regatta (August 6-9th) The Soling Canadian Championship ( August 6-9th) CORK International Regatta ( August 10-14th) CORK Olympic Classes Regatta (August 14-18th) The CORK leadership continues to closely monitor all developments related to COVID-19. We will continue to prepare for the CORK Fall Regatta following the measures recommended by health, government and sailing agencies. We remain engaged with the City of Kingston and the local health authority to develop a plan on how the event might be conducted as restrictions are eased. The decision to host the CORK Fall Regatta will be made not later than 45 days ahead of the scheduled start date. Our wish is for everyone to continue to stay safe, practise physical distancing and follow the guidelines of your local government. Thank you for your understanding and support during this difficult time. The CORK Board of Directors www.cork.org

GOOD NEWS ALERT!!! Message from from Sail NS: Hi everyone!!!!! Today the Province announced the latest easing of restrictions.... You can read the full release here https://novascotia.ca/news/release/?id=20200618004 In the release it says: People can now gather in groups of up to 10 without physical distancing. People in a group are not required to be exclusive but they are strongly encouraged to maintain a consistent group. This is especially important for Nova Scotians who are more at risk of complications from COVID-19. This change replaces the concept of family household bubbles. What it means for our clubs and programs: I run Sail Canada and RYA courses on my keelboat. Can I deliver the programs now without having to physically distance from my students? YES. But given the restriction on no overnight summer camps, it is our interpretation that live aboard courses are not permitted. We have a 420 program. Can friends sail together now? YES. Kids can sail with their friends. None of my regular racing crew is in my bubble. Can we sail together now? YES, just no more than 10 on a boat! Friends are coming to NS soon to visit from another province. Do they need to self-isolate for 14 days? YES, however the Premier announced if all goes well that will be removed the 3rd week of July. Can I put 11 ice cubes in my Dark & Stormy after a great day of sailing or racing with 9 great friends? YES. Ice cubes are not people! Please remember that the public health measures regarding good hygiene and regular cleaning of high contact surfaces remain in effect.

Our celebrity for Sunday 11am presentation is Chris Draper! Olympic medallist, America’s Cup sailor and foiling expert. Come join us! Open to everyone! About Chris Draper: From a young age, Chris has been involved in sailing, racing Optis. At age 12, he won the national title and began travelling internationally representing Great Britain on the world stage, going on to win the silver medal@at the Youth World Championships. That was eventually followed by Olympic success, e...arning the world No.1 ranking in the 49er class for five consecutive years, winning multiple world and European titles en route to a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games. A bit of a speed demon, Draper then moved on to faster boats. Winning the Extreme Sailing Series in 2009 raised his profile and saw him get signed up by America’s Cup Team Korea, followed by Luna Rossa Challenge and most recently SoftBank Team Japan as wing trimmer. After the America’s Cup, he took a year off to sail around the Caribbean with his family on their cruiser sailboat. In 2019 he came back straight to the big leagues as part of the Sail GP Team GBR. A formidable sailor with a inspirational story, he is a current legend of our sport. Good news Friday! This afternoon the province announced an easing of some public health restrictions around COVID-19, with immediate effect. Not least of whi...ch the province specifically states that ...people can attend boating, yacht or sailing clubs for the purpose of preparing boats for use. . We, like you, are very excited by this news after such an exhausting couple of months. Members are welcome back to the yard to commence preparing their boats for the coming season, at your convenience. Pending further information from our province, our ramp, cranes and spar shed remain closed. We are monitoring this situation closely and will update you as clarification is received. . Today’s announcement is good news for our club and for sailing in the province as it places us closer to the beginning of our boating season. . And again, thank you for being very respectful of the RNSYS guidelines in place, it is much appreciated. Please continue to observe and respect the Health NS guidelines so that we can get to the next level safely and as soon as possible. See more
