Disappointed to read about another member of our Provincial Police force being charged with impaired driving. How a police officer, who definitely knows how wrong and stupid it is to drive under the influence, can do this is beyond me. I can understand how being an alcoholic is a disease and maybe you can't stop yourself from drinking but you can stop yourself from drinking and driving.

It is with great sorrow that we share the news of the passing of one of the DD Industry's pioneers. Myrna Lachance, co-owner of Keys to Us passed away on August the 21st. Myrna along with her husband Lionel launched the first DD service to operate in Durham Region back in 1996. They opened the business after having lost a family member in a horrific traffic accident that was caused by an impaired driver. Not wanting another family to experience a similar tragedy they hoped t...o change people's habits of driving while impaired by offering a better and safer alternative. Little did they know that they would be instrumental in the development of a much needed industry that today spans coast to coast across Canada. Posting this as a reminder to all the managers and staff working in the hospitality industry out here in Clarington to be careful not to overserve and to remember that Road Runners are here to help you get your customers home safely. When dealing with a customer who is showing signs of impairment and you suspect they might have intentions of driving themselves home don't be afraid to drop one of our cards down on the bar or table before them and suggest that they call themselves a DD. You might even consider asking for their keys to insure that they really did call for a DD.

Did you know that you can be fined for not clearing the snow and ice off your vehicle? This is a pet peeve for me. Can't stand it when I see people who are too lazy to clean off their vehicles of snow and ice before heading out on the road. Winter driving is hazardous enough without chunks of ice and snow flying at us while driving down the highway.

I can't believe that someone who has been hired to drive people home as a profession could be so irresponsible and careless! He should have to pay double the fines and never be allowed to drive professionally again in any transportation service occupation.

New Years Eve Reservations Road Runners will once again be taking reservations this year for service on New Years Eve. Like last year there will be a New Years Reservation surcharge of $15.00 in effect and you will be asked to pay for the first 5 kms of your trip in advance. So each reservation will require a Non-Refundable deposit of $30.00 paid in advance through Interact E-Transfer. The surcharge will be in addition to your normal service fee but will insure that a driver ...will arrive within a 30 minute window of your requested pick up time. We have been doing this for the last two years and are proud to say that we haven't missed a pick up time yet! To make a reservation simply give us a call at 905-626-8919 and ask for Karen. The following news story just reinforces what I have told many people over the years. If you are going to use a DD make sure that they are a fully licenced and sober driver. If the driver has a learner's permit and requires supervision when driving the passenger in the front seat must be sober. If not they could be charge like this person.

Sadly there are still too many people that don't get it. Our thoughts and prayers to the families of these young men and the family of the impaired driver if he has one.

Think your safe sitting in your car while waiting for a taxi, Uber or a DD Service after a night of drinking? Think again. Whether your vehicle is running or not if you are in possession of the keys and you are inside the parked vehicle you can be charged with "Care and Control" which is almost as bad as "Drinking and Driving".

Impaired driving is not a problem limited to just the Christmas Holidays, it's a year round problem! Sadly there are still too many people out there that continue to drink and drive. We had a fellow the other night that told us he's currently before the courts defending an impaired driving charge that he got while driving home from a bar after having consumed just two drinks! Never did he think he would blow over from having just two beers. Why risk it? If you get caught driving impaired the costs you will incur can easily exceed $20,000. You can avoid all that by simply making a simple call for a safe and affordable ride home with either a professional DD Service like ours, an Uber or Lyft or call a taxi.
