One of my favourite buildings in Guelph, On, is the A.B. Petrie Building. The unique facade, separates this wonderful work of architecture from most other building’s. The dresses in the windows look amazing in this light. The sign below, on the bottom floor reads very well in this light too. There were some edits involved to eliminate a few distracting elements such as, on the rooftop to the left, there was a air exchange unit and on the sidewalk were a few parking signs. A night at the Apollo Cinema with Alex & Samantha. This lovely couple chose the location and had the idea for us to capture Alex lifting Sam in celebration of their engagement. What a great idea to return to where they started dating. With the sign in the background, a lift created this dynamic composition and brought attention to their love. As Sam’s stretched out arms reveal her beautiful ring. Alex was a trooper, as he had earlier in the day, cut his hand.... Environmental portraits tell a story that goes deep into the soul of the subject and the artist. We can learn a lot from the two... for the subject we can ask, why is this person in this environment, how are they interacting with their setting and how are they connecting with the photographer. Conversely, we can ask... why did the photographer choose this composition, what is being conveyed by the lighting and how is the subject connected to the scene. These are just a few of... the aspects of a portrait that we can ask. What is unique is that, it is now up to the viewer to interpret what is being expressed. This first photograph is a self-portrait... what do you see? In the second portrait, the subject is being captured in a mirroring composition... is there anything being related? As a photographer, I take many approaches to creating an image because every subject has there own story and needs to be told in their own way. As a photographer, I find it difficult to work within a limited subject matter. As I’m always wanting to create images that communicate an idea or thought. These ideas or thoughts can come from the animate and inanimate which quickly turn into concepts that I can use to explore that spark of inspiration. This bottle of Rawleigh’s was discovered at a garage sale in Eden Mills. What a wonderful find, considering that many bottles from this era generally don’t have their caps in...tact. Something I didn’t realize until after I started collecting antique bottles. What else is interesting is that there is a residue, possibly vanilla extract, coating the inside of the bottle. Which makes this bottle even more unique. In an instance, I knew how I wanted to photograph this bottle. On a clean white background, to bring attention to these beautiful details. The thought behind the spark, is what defines this bottle? Which was explored with another bottle (in a negative way. Is it the glass, the residue or the negative space outside of the bottle, that defines this bottle. What this breaks down to is existentialism.
