Interactive. Engaging. Important. Excruciating. This resource from the John Howard Society sheds light on the need for systemic reform in the penal and police systems. Please click through. ... https://johnhoward.on.ca/brokenrecord/

When it comes to municipal budgets - especially in light of the pandemic - perhaps the biggest challenge we face is our deep dependency on regressive property tax and user fees. This is structural and it is often unjust. And it must change. https://thewhig.com//pandemic-should-prompt-rethink-of-mun

Dear Kingston family and Trillium District neighbours; Please, for the safety of our residents and sanctity of our by-laws, do not drive down the pedestrian path into the Lions Civic Gardens south of the Isabel Turner library. It's beautiful. But it's for people not cars. Thanks!... UPDATE: After talking further with city staff, local residents, and Councillor Lisa Osanic, I can confirm as of 2021 there will be bollards placed to block cars from entering the park. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen!

I just signed! Will you? Let's keep working together to deepen democracy in our community. More here: https://www.yeskingston.org/

Our MPP Ian Arthur hits the nail on the head! The province over-riding local decision - making about local decision making! - is one thing and one thing only: an affront to democracy. To add insult to injury, the government is saying that Ranked Ballots cannot be used in light of COVID, 2 years out from an election. ... Again, Ian is right: that logic is "faulty [and] distracts and diminishes from those who actually suffered."

Coming Soon to Trillium District: Last night, I was proud to support the purchase of Fairfield Manor West by the City. The site will, likely in the next year, be home to supportive and deeply affordable housing. Residents will receive the care they need in situ, and be a short walk away from major transportation routes and commercial activity.... Is it a silver bullet for all things and all people? No, it's not supposed to be. It's a small step in helping those who need it most. I understand that this announcement might make some neighbours feel uncomfortable (though I have not heard from any constituents directly about this file as of writing). However, I am assured by the fact that the building will be run by a strong partner in the social services field vetted first by municipal staff. Indeed, I believe that as a community we are only as strong as our weakest member. And, truth be told, some of the folks who will live here are struggling. So let's be strong and welcome them with open arms and full hearts. Because, as we all now know because of COVID, we're all in this together. https://www.thewhig.com//kingston-to-buy-former-retirement

My position on the city's Official Plan has evolved: I once saw it as an unchangeable (other than mandated updates every 5 years) list of restrictions. Either a project conformed or it did not, black or white. There was little room for anything else, any other colours or movements, in my mind. I now see the Official Plan as a living, even democratic, document that can and should be changed to allow for good projects like the one below before Planning Committee tonight: All to... address serious concerns like our housing shortage, affordability crisis, and climate emergency. Indeed, like most things in life, the planning process is shades of grey. Not that there are not right (white) and wrong (black) decisions within. But that when you hold these things together, a proposal is rarely as starkly contrasted as you might think initially.
