When I first joined Instagram I saw a post about a '100 day project' where you made one of something every day for 100 days. I had been out of art school for a while and liked the idea of a project that was outside of my regular art practice. I decided to make small collages from paper cutouts and paint and call them 'colour studies'. I was interested in mixing colours and patterns and hadn't done much collage at this point. After the 100 days were over I found that thinking... about collage had changed the way I painted - I only really started to collage into my paintings after this project. I also found that I missed the project when it was over and continued to make these smaller works when I had the time. Over time I added found materials, photographs, old letters, postcards and envelopes. I continued to call them 'colour studies' as an homage to the original project. - Emily Filler https://galerierobertsonares.com//colour-study-palm-trees-

Jon Setter, Mondrian-Esque 1, 2020 Yesterday I posted about Chris Shepherd and mentioned that he and Jon Setter (@jonsetter) had engaged in an email exchange ...about their practices, which will soon be published on the FFOTO.com blog (look for it mid-August)! Like Chris, Jon photographs a lot in urban settings, however the output is quite different! Jon is located in Sydney, Australia. He is known for his abstract compositions that come out quite painterly - this photo is a great example. When posting about Chris yesterday, I mentioned that he has a very active Instagram account - so does Jon. In fact, in his story highlights, Jon shares photographs that you can screenshot and use for your phone’s wallpaper. I have been using one for weeks now . I am so excited for everyone to be able to read the exchange between these two incredible artists. Their careers are so similar in many ways and yet strikingly different in others. The discussion provides so much insight into their individual practices. This post was written by Cassie (@cassiespires), an MA student in photo preservation and collections management at Ryerson University, and an intern at FFOTO.
Galerie Robertson Arès is pleased to announce the opening of Kyle Austin Dunn's first solo exhibition is Canada. "Directions with No Endpoints is a show about choosing paths and maneuvering towards undefined outcomes. A major intention I have for the work, conceptually and formally, is movement. I want to encourage eyes, bodies, brains, and psyches to be in motion without relying on a goal or desired result as the guide. My reason for the title has to do with feelings of anx...iety formed by a lack of control that I think society experiences collectively- with the most pronounced and difficult consequence being a state of paralysis. This is my response and counter to that effect. It is also a continuation of ideas I have been exploring for a few years that deal with and question the cyclical nature of things. The word "direction" has somewhat contradictory definitions, among them being "the course along which someone or something moves" and also "the course taken in order to reach a destination." Framing the idea of destinations, outcomes, goals etc. as "endpoints" is a way to examine these common objectives from a different perspective. I like to create titles that use words with a higher multitude of meanings. To me, the more definitions a word has, the more potential for conflicting meanings depending on context, which provides a satisfying illustration of the limitations of language for communication." Myriad will showcase a series of new works that move between abstraction and introspection of matter. Ryan Crotty's new body of work defies the mind and challenges its faculties of perception.
The exhibition is a journey through time, art and history. A bridge-point where contemporary art and academic art challenge each other, the work becomes a particular temporal and aesthetic experience. Lino Lago’s work provokes a reading between the lines, guided by movement. Curated by François Arès and Emily Robertson

Emily Filler just did an amazing interview with Chapter 89 Magazine. When asked about her creative thought process, here was her response: I rarely go into a new work without any idea of how I’d like it to turn out. Usually I dream up some sort of idea or technique I’d like to try. Then it almost never works the way I thought it would. Then I work off of that and something new emerges. I’m never married to an idea, I’m always open to changing it as I’m working at least fo...r me the work turns out better this way. Sometimes when I’m starting something new and have no ideas I just put paint down and see what happens. Like any colors, any placement, it doesn’t matter and then I work off that. It’s so daunting to look at a blank canvas, it’s so much easier to work off of something that’s there even if it’s a mistake or something you don’t initially like the look of.
