I had to send a one-paragraph bio in for an event I'm participating in later this month and it made me think about marketing. (I know, shocking.) Here's what I sent: Robyn Roste is a professional writer, marketer and podcast editor. She has spent more than a decade working at an international non-profit, first as a blogger and now as a marketing manager, where she oversees a media agency. This has afforded her the opportunity to learn marketing theory and... apply it to real-world situations. She also runs a freelance writing business providing content marketing and journalism services. Her clients range from agencies, newspapers and small businesses to authors, bloggers and entrepreneurs. She markets her business using the tactics and strategies she has learned from her day job and understands the most important part about marketing is creating meaningful connections with qualified customers. It's the last line that made me think. I thought about deleting it because maybe it sounded a little obvious or came off weird. I had some insecurity with it, in the moment. But then I realized, this is my negative self-talk coming up. The protective instinct that doesn't want me to put msyelf out there in case someone disagrees or is offended or angered by my opinion for some reason. So I left it in. I share this story because, even though it's kind of not a big deal, it's an example of the struggle we all face every day to talk about our work with other people. We have this great thing we do, and we hold back from marketing ourselves because of fear. Or insecurity. Or self-doubt. But we have to market ourselves. We just do. My faithful dahlias, blooming for another year! This was a rough season for my flowers. Spring was a disaster, cold and wet. And then...the slugs. So. Many. Slugs. They love dahlias....
