Go to any ensemble rehearsal and sooner or later you are bound to hear the conductor mention the critical importance of subdivision when holding a long note, internally break it up into two or more beats to keep your rhythm more accurate. It turns out there is a lot of scientific data behind this!

Wow! Tech and voices coming together in these challenging times... interesting ideas with an Albertan chamber choir: https://www.npr.org//car-concerts-offer-choirs-a-way-to-re

A new newsletter! (apologies for just missing the end of September in posting it)

‘Tis the Season, although it feels a little different than any other year! Although we would usually host a fundraiser concert, this year we are unable to and instead will just get right to the heart of the season. Let's give to those who need it most. https://www.canadahelps.org//richmond-orchestra-chorus-a/

Both listening and making music are wonderful things.

Did you ever wonder what the range of the piccolo trumpet is?

Alas, we won't be able to schedule formal concerts this season but members are still gearing up for rehearsals and hopefully some musical offerings to Richmond and beyond. Read more from our chorus director, Brigid Coult, on what lies ahead!

Some things in music need a little patience.

While the near future is hard to predict, we are as committed as ever to a musical future for Richmond. www.roca.ca//2020/8/21/a-noteworthy-organization-to-support

Have you ever wondered what a violin string looks like while being played in slow motion?

Another model for concerts in these times: five minutes with a solo audience. Sounds intense!

This is one of the most impressive virtual collaborations out there!

Tonight would have been our season end Beatles concert. Read about what could have been, and hopefully will instead happen just a little down the road, and find out more about two of our members! https://www.roca.ca/blog/2020/6/6/the-roca-report-june-2020

In times when we can’t gather in large groups, I wonder if there will be a surge of chamber music and small concerts. Take a listen to these magnificent viola duets!

Like every musician, our singers are missing the joy of performing with each other and for an audience. In an effort to bring us all a little closer together, w...e hope you enjoy our virtual performance of Sheppard's Libera Nos, the text of which has a particular resonance and poignancy at the moment. The title meaning ‘deliver/free us’ not only reflects our collective desire to be released back into normality but has a particular, and unexpected, relevance which becomes apparent at the end of the film. Recorded at home by every member of the choir and conducted by Harry Christophers, it reminds us that no matter where we are, music is always with us, continuing to uplift and provide peace and hope in these testing times. To hear more about the project, why the Sheppard means so much to The Sixteen and more, head on over to Scala Radio for an online interview with Harry Christophers: https://planetradio.co.uk/scala-radio/ With thanks to CDC Films - www.cdcfilms.co.uk
