Common mistakes with posture Sticking butt out/overarching lower back Flat back (pelvis tucked in causing a flat lower back) Leaning on one leg... Slouching in your chair/sitting on the edge Do any of these sound familiar to you? If so, then you are more than likely experiencing a certain level of discomfort in your back especially after longer periods of standing in the same spot. Spending too much time in these positions will lead to pain, dysfunction and eventually deconditioning. At Rosedale you have the opportunity to work with various health care practitioners such as chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists along with osteopathy and/or acupuncture to improve your spinal mobility. Here's one corrective exercise - Bird dog 1. Start in a four-point position with your hands underneath your shoulders and knees underneath your hips. 2. Your back should be in a neutral position and your chin should be tucked in. 3. Tighten your abdominal muscles and reach one arm and the opposite leg out without allowing your pelvis/trunk to move. 4. Imagine grabbing something in front of you with your arm and reaching out towards a wall behind you with your opposite foot to lengthen the spine. 5. Return to the starting position & repeat with the other side. 6. Try completing 2-3 sets of 6-8 reps with a 2-3 minute rest in between #rosedalewellness #neckpain #physiotherapy #downtown #chiropractor #workingfromhome #optimalmovement #mobility #stability #posture #backpain See more

How can I prevent lower back pain while working from home? The number of people working from home has significantly increased over the past few months. Due to this, you may have noticed some new aches and pains that may not have been there before. Here are some things to keep in mind while youre working from home: 1. Moving around regularly and changing posture frequently: try to avoid prolonged periods of standing/sitting. Take it a step further by doing some core strength...ening exercises to help stabilize your lower back. Try placing your hands behind your head to help you lengthen your spine, then reach your arms overhead towards the ceiling and take 2-3 deep breaths, this should help to relieve some of the stress on the spine and can be repeated as needed! Another alternative stretch you can do sitting down is placing your hands on the small of your back (fingers pointing down), keeping your chin level & shoulders down, try to touch your elbows together & hold for 2-3 breaths. 2. Keep a good posture: Avoid letting your shoulders roll forward or letting your nose creep towards the screen. Ideally, your eyes should be level with your monitor and your chin should be parallel to the floor. You may need to adjust your laptop/computer screen by placing it on a pile of books or a cardboard box to ensure a neutral head position (keep in mind if you changed your laptop position, you should then use a separate mouse that is at a comfortable height and does not strain your wrist). 3. Use ergonomically correct furniture: if your chair does not have lumbar support for the curve in your lower back then you can try to use a small pillow or rolled-up towel to support this area. Adjust the height of the chair so that your feet are flat on the floor with your knees and hips at a 90-degree angle. If your chair does not adjust then use a small box/footstool to achieve this position. Limit the time that you work from your couch/bed even with pillow support! #rosedalewellness #backpain #physiotherapy #downtown #chiropractor #workingfromhome #optimalmovement #mobility #stability #physiotherapy

Waking up in the mornings with pain and stiffness in your neck is a common problem among many of us and not exactly a great start to the day but there are some things that you can address at night time to help. Firstly, there is no single best pillow recommendation. Avoid using a pillow thats too firm when you are sleeping on your back as this will put your neck in a flexed position. It is also a good idea to avoid pillows that are too soft (particularly if you are a side... sleeper) as these often dont offer enough support. The aim is to keep your neck in a healthy and neutral position. Avoid sleeping on your stomach as this is far from neutral! Trying a latex pillow instead of a feather pillow might be helpful if this is an ongoing issue for you. Pre-existing injury or dysfunction can also contribute to this problem. Therefore, if you are continuing to experience neck pain consistently in the mornings it could be a sign of weakness and/or imbalances in your muscles. A physiotherapist can help you with specific stretches, mobilizations and strengthening exercises following a thorough assessment. In the meantime, try to avoid complete rest and sudden movements and focus on slow and controlled movements such as bringing your ear to your shoulder. For pain relief ice can be helpful during the initial 48 72 hours and heat can be applied after this. #virtualrehab #rosedalewellnesscentre #virtualsocialwork #headaches #rehabjourney #backpain #optimalmovement #optimalhealth #stress #mobility #virtualnaturopath #mentalwellness #socialdistancing #workingathome #toronto See more

Spring is here! And with this lovely change in season can come allergies! While there can be a genetic factor to allergies, there are also things we may be doing on a day to day that can actually make them worse. Here are the top 3 ways to reduce allergy symptoms: 1.Check your diet... Gluten and dairy are common food triggers for many people and can make allergy symptoms worse. Ever notice that you have to clear your throat more or get stuffy after eating pizza or cheese? Try cutting these foods out for a few weeks and see how your body responds. 2.Support your gut Over 75% of your immune system is actually in your digestive tract! Supporting your gut health is super important for allergies because it helps support your immune system. Allergies are a sign of an overactive immune system so supporting gut health with a probiotic can be helpful. 3. Regularly clean and dust your environment Dust mites are one of the most common indoor allergens.Dust can build up very quickly in our homes and cars, especially around our electronics. Keeping your environment clean by dusting weekly can help take the burden off your body by reducing its exposure to dust mites. Curious on how you can get more help with your allergies? Email us at [email protected] and we can pair you up with one of our Naturopathic Doctors who can help you tackle your allergies once and for all.

Having trouble getting a good nights sleep? Weve put together a few tips to help you unwind and start getting some ZZZZs. 1. Practice good Light Hygiene - Its important to get sunshine wherever you can while social distancing- stepping out onto a balcony or doorstep or going for (socially distant) walks are crucial ways to get the light you require in the daytime. In the evenings, use lower, warmer light before bed to help signal to your body that sleep time is approac...hing. Unplug and turn off screens 30-90 minutes before bedtime and keep your bedroom dark. 2. Get Some Exercise- Whether doing an at home workout from your favourite instagrammer, going for a solo hike, or doing virtual physical training, getting exercise not only helps your body to feel good, but is great for your mental health too. 3. Healthy Stress Relievers - Use stress relieving activities during your evening routine (deep breathing, meditation, stretching, essential oils, reading, music, practicing gratitude) because stress hormones suppress melatonin making it difficult to fall asleep. Maintaining a wellness routine includes healthy sleep hygiene. In the current times its easy for our minds to run away from us when its time to sleep but we must (we cannot stress this enough), remember to breathe and know that you are not alone.

More Pain While Working From Home? Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, workers deemed non-essential were mandated to stay home. If youre one of these people, you may be noticing new aches and pains that you did not experience before at the office. Thats because of the differences in the ergonomic design of your office and home workstations! So, what can we do? Here are 3 simple tips:... 1 View your screen with a straight neck Have the middle of your screen at eye level. Dont look down at your screen and dont angle your screen so to twist your neck - people end up dealing with neck pain from the swiveling. If you have a separate screen or you are using a laptop, raise it by placing it on some books or boxes to position it straight in front of you. 2 Have your keyboard and mouse or touchpad at a comfortable height in front of you If youre using a laptop, and it has been raised to get your screen to the right level, then use a separate keyboard and mouse. Make sure your arms are close to the side of your body when using the keyboard and mouse. The nerves in the hand leave the neck and run down through the shoulder, elbow and wrist. When your arms are at your side, the nerves arent being compressed, but the more you stretch it out to the side, the greater chance you have of compressing these nerves, and/or straining your neck and shoulders. 3 Sit back in your chair Dont hunch forward in your chair. Your lower back is supposed to curve towards your belly - this is called lordosis. This is the most relaxed and natural posture for the lower back and puts the least pressure on the low back discs. When you lean forward, the lumbar spine bends out and puts a lot of pressure on the low back discs. So, sit in a way that the natural lordotic curve of your lower back is supported. If the chair does not have good low back support, use a rolled-up towel behind your low back. NEED HELP? We have 2 options VIRTUAL and EMERGENCY treatments.
