We are all missing our annual bobsled race and the rest of the Winter Carnival this time of year, but this page taken from the Cominco magazine shows what bobsledding would have been like before January 1962. The Kimberley Snow Fiesta decided to hold bobsled races and interest in bobsledding increased substantially. Very soon after the addition of this race, the Kimberley Bobsled Club was formed and by January 1962, there were over 50 members! @Teck Resources Ltd ... #MiningMonday #WinterCarnival #BobsledRacing #SnowFiesta #ComincoMagazine

Help us out with another Community Quandary! We once had a Corinthian Lodge in Rossland: were you a member of Rossland's Corinthian Lodge or know someone who could help us? We'd love to hear more about the history, membership, activities/events, etc. of the Lodge.

In February, the RMDC is hosting Our Living Languages, a travelling exhibit from the Royal BC Museum. Our Living Languages explores the rich diversity and resilience of Indigenous language and culture within BC. Through interactive stations, video, and audio, Our Living Languages provides visitors with the opportunity to learn more about the history of disrupted languages in BC, the complexity of these languages, and the people and entire communities that are working tire...lessly to document and revitalize them. Keep an eye out over the next few months for supplementary content developed by our Sinixt partners as they work on key language revitalization projects. Our Living Languages is a co-production of the Royal BC Museum and the First Peoples’ Cultural Council, a Crown Corporation with a mandate to support the revitalization of First Nations languages, arts and cultures in British Columbia. The exhibition was developed with the assistance of the Language Exhibition Advisory Committee, comprised of cultural experts from First Nations communities across the province. We acknowledge that we live and work on the unceded Sinixt tum ula?xw (territory), and we thank our partners for working with us on this great project.

In 1898, the Jordan Block was owned by Mr. Smith and Mr. Scott. It was initially exempt from taxes as it was used as the Fire/Hose Hall for Rossland until 1900 when the brick Fire Hall was established. One of the most common research questions we get asked is about the history of people's homes. Are you curious about the history of your home - when it was built, who owned it previously, and if there are any historic photos of it? Today is Olaus Jeldness' 164th Birthday! Normally, we'd bring everyone together for a fun celebration at the Museum or at Rossland Beer Company to share Olaus and other ski history tales - this year, we'll have to stick with a virtual celebration. What was once heralded as a grande spectator sport, ski jumping and downhill skiing are now massively popular sports enjoyed by many. In Rossland, this winter sport - now integral to the community spirit - was prompted by an enthusi...astic Norwegian miner, Olaus Jeldness. Due to his passion and skills, the hills around are populated by people who love skiing and has developed our mountainside village into one of the province's ski meccas. Here is to Olaus Jeldness! A social media toast to you, on your birthday Photo #: 2289.0019 https://basininstitute.org/search/details.html #ToastToOlaus"

Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters - Started in 2013 right here in BC, in the Cariboo/Williams Lake area by Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor. Orange Shirt Day was organized to open the door to a global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. "It is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come." Have a look at Phyllis' story here: https://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html

We all know that Rossland is home to some brilliant minds! However, one oustanding inventor developed an incredible piece of technology that has left a lasting legacy on society. Donald Hings, a former resident of Rossland and employee at CM&S (now Teck) invented the "Packset" in 1937, which was patented and gifted to the federal government when WWII started. This was the first ever portable radio transceiver or walkie talkie! #SciLit Read more on our website: https://www.rosslandmuseum.ca//4/inventing-the-walkie-talk
