Using books in my session today to work on story comprehension but I love that we can also include oral language, vocabulary, print knowledge and sound awareness while we're at it! Is your child difficult to understand? Do you often have to translate what your child is saying for others? It is common for parents (or close caregivers) to understand more of what their child is saying than an unfamiliar listener does. Intelligibility is the percentage of what a child says that the listener can understand. Although there are many factors that can impact intelligibility, this chart provides some general guidelines of how much a parent and an unfamiliar liste...ner should be able to understand of a child’s speech. As you can see, even until age 4 it is quite common for parents to not understand 100% of what their own child is saying. If you find that your child is really hard to understand (or falling below these percentages) or you have concerns about their speech, I highly recommend having an evaluation completed by a trained speech language pathologist. Will my "Late Talker" just "grow out of it?" A Late Talker is a toddler under 30 months who has a small vocabulary for his or her age, but is developing typically otherwise. Between 2030% of Late Talkers do not grow out of their language delay. ... Even "Late Talkers" who seem to grow out of it are working at a disadvantage when it comes to developing later language and literacy skills. Check out this article from Hanen to find out more! When should I be concerned if my child isn’t saying a certain sound properly? Typically, speech sounds in English develop from the time a child starts talking up until age 7. A study by McLeod & Crowe (2018) reviewed 15 studies that looked at English consonant acquisition in typically developing children. The graphic shows the sounds that are typically mastered by most children at that age. Using a song to build language! Similar to repetitive books, a repetitive song can be a great way to help your child start using a gesture, sound or even a word! Sing the song slowly with your child and pause before the last word in the line. Wait to give your child a chance to fill in the word, make a sound or show you the action/gesture.... If your child doesn’t fill it in after you wait, then you can model it for them and continue the song. Any simple children’s song will work as long as you slow it down and try to use actions/gestures. Here’s an example with Wheels on the Bus: Parent: The wheels on the bus go round and ..(pause). Your child can now show you the gesture (moving hands around), make a sound or tell you round. Here’s a tip for building language with your baby or toddler! Use repetitive books. One of my favourites is Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. It’s also a lift the flap so helps keep wiggly kiddos engaged in the book. Repetitive books are great because they help your child to know what’s coming. Be sure to read the same book over and over so your child knows it well. When reading the book, emphasize the last word in the phrase. Hear in the video how I say back a bit louder than ...the rest. After your child is familiar with the phrase, be sure to pause right before you say that last word and wait for your child. In the video, you can hear me say So I sent him. And then waiting for James to try the word. I suggest waiting up to 8 seconds as sometimes kids need longer to process and get the word out. If they don’t say it, then you can model it for them again. ** I also recommend sitting facing your child with the book between you. When face to face it’s easier for your child to see your words and expectant face while you wait for their turn. James was super wiggly so he’s on my lap facing sideways to keep him with me!** Let me know what repetitive books you love and try this one out!
