Rotary Burnaby 11.11.2020

We thank Simon Fraser University’s staff and students for their video in recognition of financial support such as the Rotary Club of Burnaby Scholarship of Education: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jii8Cm1QKuQ These awards are all the more important during COVID: to provide students financial security and peace of mind to study and not delay their program. One of Rotary’s fundamental values is education, to support our future leaders. For this reason, our Step Up Virtual W...alkathon from Oct 26th to December 6th at bit.ly/StepUpBurnaby2020 benefits not only Low Entropy’s youth support program’s but our scholarship for education students with an emphasis on novel educational research. We are happy as a club to continue to support education and youth! The Rotary Club of Burnaby and Moscrop Interact Club are proud to announce the Step Up Virtual Walkathon 2020 at bit.ly/StepUpBurnaby2020 from October 26th to December 6th! Let's step up together to raise funds to support three important community needs: environment, education, and youth support. Our club will also match 50 cents for every dollar raised! At Rotary Burnaby, we are aware of COVID's detrimental effect on our youth, our community, and charities that support the m...ost vulnerable. For this reason, this walkathon supports three causes: the protection of the environment and cute birds via the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC, a Rotary Burnaby Simon Fraser University Education scholarship to support future teachers that will guide our youth, and Low Entropy's Youth Empowering Youth program to support and empower students during this stressful time. Let's step up together to support our shared future! Share this post, join a team, or pledge a few dollars then get a tax receipt! Join the walk at bit.ly/StepUpBurnaby2020 Learn about our recipients at SFU Faculty of Education as well as www.wildliferescue.ca and lowentropy.org #StepUpVirtualWalkathon2020 #Walkathon #healthylifestyle #RotaryBurnaby #RotaryOpensOpportunities #burnaby #cuteanimals #BC #charity #volunteer #environment #youthempowerment #youthleadership #education #SFU #sfualumni #interact #moscropinteract

Rotary Burnaby 06.10.2020

Today on World Polio Day we will celebrate Rotarian and humanitarian Dr Tunji Funsho who joined TIME's 100 most influential people this year for his efforts in the successful eradication of polio in Africa. Dr Funsho led Nigeria Polio efforts as part of Rotary Club of Lekka (Nigeria), as a District Governor, and as a member of Rotary International’s Polio plus Committee. While Rotarians are no stranger to the TIME’s 100 most influential list, Dr Funsho’s inclusion is one of t...he more recent examples of polio eradication’s recognition on the world stage: how millions of potential children have avoided disfigurement and higher comorbidity due to a truly global effort between Rotary International, local Rotary Clubs, WHO, and the United Nations. While we as Rotarians may hear the refrain of Almost There and perhaps tune it out a bit too much, it is important to remember both the success and ongoing obstacles of polio. These include the massive cost of Rotary’s final leap to success and the eradication of the first human disease since smallpox. Through this amazing effort, we are always running the risk of a single polio flare-up that can spread like wildfire and undo years of progress. Polio related networks of vaccine storage and distribution can guide the containment of pandemics like COVID, and of polio’s lasting legacy in crippling children that will grow up with accessibility challenges. While we will not all receive a TIME’s Top-100 listing, every polio plus donation and fundraiser is weaved into Rotary’s and Dr Funsho’s success. Nonetheless, there is still so much left to accomplish before next year's world polio day. #ServiceAboveSelf #EndPolioNow #WorldPolioDay #District5040
