February 8th, 2021 West Point Grey Legion 142 of the Royal Canadian Legion is pleased to announce it has received $11,919.22 from Veterans Affairs Canada to help cope with the challenges of the Covid 19 pandemic. Branch 142 was closed from March 17th until June 10th, 2020 yet still had to deal with all the expenses of keeping the facility operational. Legion 142 President Lois Sadler was very relieved when notice of the funding was received. President Sadler states "...with no revenue from the Lounge or activities, reserve funding quickly disappeared. The funds are welcome and greatly appreciated. The money will be used to offset expenses incurred during the closure." With continued reduced hours and fewer members able to attend the Lounge, utilities, insurance, property tax, administration costs, wages and other needs must still be financially covered. Joyce Murray, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra offered the following statement: Dropping into my local legion the West Point Grey Branch has reinforced for me the critical role the Royal Canadian Legion and its many branches play in the lives and well-being of Veterans and their families. Our government to recognizes the importance of the Legion here in Vancouver Quadra and across Canada. That is why $14 million in funding from the Veteran Organization Emergency Support Fund (VOESF) was dedicated specifically to the Royal Canadian Legion, with $11,919 going to the West Point Grey branch. Because of the VOESF, local Legion branches and organizations such as VETS Canada, True Patriot Love, and ANAVETS units across Canada can now continue their work with Veterans and their families at a time when it is needed most. COVID-19 has hit Veterans organizations hard. These groups provide essential services and it is vitally important that they are able to continue to operate and serve Veterans. Our government is committed to supporting our Veterans, and that means ensuring that these organizations have the funds they need to make it through the pandemic. The funding received by Legion 142 was granted through BC Yukon Command by an application process. Founded in 1925, the Legion is Canada’s largest veteran support and community service organization and has more than a quarter Million members. The aid package demonstrates the Federal Government's commitment to the Royal Canadian Legion and the Veterans, and their families, the Legion serves.

Captain Sir Thomas Moore, a Veteran of World War Two, exemplified true duty to his country and the world at the beginning of the global Covid 19 pandemic. When the virus began sweeping the world in early 2020 "Captain Tom" began walking daily in the grounds of his retirement home in England, to raise money for Health Care Workers. His effort raised Millions of dollars and a meeting with Queen Elizabeth where he was knighted. Today, Captain Tom succumbed to Covid 19. Rest in Peace Sir and thank you for your service.

Legion 142 shares sad news about one of the great musicians who performed for numerous years in the Lounge. John Kisil, who along with H. Christine Pomeroy, hosted an Open Jam at the Legion, giving many veteran and budding musicians the opportunity to play on stage. John was a mainstay of the music scene in Vancouver. Our condolences to Chris and all the people who got to experience John's talents and enthusiasm. RIP

Admiral Art McDonald has been appointed to serve as Canada's 20th Chief of the Defence Staff. He takes over from General Jonathan Vance, who is retiring after 39 years of distinguished service in the Canadian Armed Forces. General Vance was appointed to the position in July, 2015, making him the longest serving defence chief in the history of the CAF. Prior to his appointment as CDS, Adm McDonald commanded the Royal Canadian Navy from 2019 to 2021. The Chief of Defence... Staff is responsible for the activities of the Canadian Armed Forces and ensures the readiness and ability for Canada to fulfill military commitments and obligations. The CDS is the senior serving military advisor to the Government of Canada. The change of command comes as the CAF plays an integral role in the national Covid 19 response. Thank you for your service General Vance. Congratulations to Admiral McDonald. See more
