Was at the Hong Kong Memorial Wall in Ottawa for the anniversary of the end of WW2
Seventy-nine years ago, on this day, the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC), a milestone in the history of women’s participation in the Canadian military, was f...ormed during the Second World War. Faced with a personnel shortage in war services and production, the Canadian government announced the formation of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps on 13 August 1941 with the goal of freeing up men for combat. Canadian women were mobilized, for the first time, for service in the #CAF and assigned jobs involving what some/many considered to be traditional female work such as cooking and clerical duties. However, women also pioneered roles in mechanized and technical fields during this time. For many of the women who enlisted, patriotism was their primary motivation. Others joined in search of new opportunities and adventure and the prestige of serving in uniform. Members of the CWAC were pioneers for female members of today’s CAF. Their pride, discipline and dedication helped overcome society’s fears associated with the erosion of traditional morality and femininity. Today, women can enroll in any CAF occupation and serve in any environment. In all trades CAF men and women are selected for training and career opportunities in exactly the same way based on rank, qualifications and merit. Canadian women have never hesitated to step up when called upon to serve their country. What are you waiting for?
