Jinan Shinzato Jinan Shinzato was a senior student of Chojun Miyagi and considered by many to be the most likely successor. Shinzato was born on Okinawa in 190...1. At the age of 23 he would start training in Goju-Ryu, under its founder Chojun Miyagi. In addition to the Goju-Ryu training, Jinan Shinzato also trained Judo. He also worked as a detective with the Naha Police Force. It was common in the day for karate men to be police officers. Miyagi thought very highly of Shinzato. When he was called to Japan to demonstrate karate in 1930 he sent Shinzato in his place. The officials were impressed by Shinzato's performance and asked him what his style was called. This must have caught him off guard. At the time karate was simply karate, or toudi(the older term). Shinzato thought for a minute and said Hanko-Ryu, meaning half hard style. Upon his return to Okinawa he consulted with Miyagi about the name. Miyagi gave it great thought and decided to go with the name Goju-Ryu. This comes from a poem from the bubish referring to inhaling and exhaling as being softness and hardness. Thus Goju-Ryu was the first style to be officially named. In addition to demonstrating for Miyagi in Japan, Shinzato would often accompany Miyagi on other trips to teach and demonstrate Goju-Ryu. In 1939 Jinan Shinzato was awarded the title of Renshi by the Japan Budo Association. He was considered by many to be talented and being one of Miyagi's most senior student it was likely Miyagi had intended for him to be his successor. Tragedy struck in 1945. During the battle of Okinawa, Shinzato and his unit were killed by a bombing. The world lost a great karate-ka and Miyagi lost his most talented disciple. Jinan Shinzato had a influence on many people. He had taught Yuchoko Higa karate starting in 1934 and his photograph now hangs in the Shorin-Ryu dojo of Minoru Higa to acknowledge his contributions .
