It is with great pleasure that I welcome Dr. Carmen Hansford to our practice. Carmen is a Prince George girl, she graduated from Duchess Park in 2006, attended UNBC where she studied Bio-medicine, then went to U of A to study Nutrition, prior to completing her degree in Nutrition she received early admission into the dental program at UBC. Carmen graduated from dental school in 2015, earning her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry, and she has been practising in Prince George eve...r since. Dr. Hansford married Ryan Barrette, an instrument technologist at Canfor, in 2016, and they welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Parker, in May of this year. Proof that 2020 is not without its shining moments. Carmen is an outdoor enthusiast who can be found mountain biking, playing hockey, cross country skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. This intrepid young woman grew up competing in biathlon and put herself through university working for The Ministry of Forests as a heli-attack forestry firefighter. Six years of slinging a chainsaw and working the pumps is pretty impressive. She also enjoys baking, cooking, and sewing. Yet with all of her accomplishments, Carmen is still passionate about volunteering. She loves to give back to her community and she coached cross country skiing at Otway for years. She was a Student Mentor Leader at UBC, volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, St. John's ambulance, The University Hospital of Northern BC, and The Vancouver Downtown Eastside Dental Clinic. She is truly a person with many talents and we are excited to have her energetic spirit here. Rozon Family Dental will now be Hansford and Rozon Family Dental. I will continue to work Monday through Wednesday and Dr. Hansford will be working Wednesday through Friday with alternate Saturdays. An expanded week will afford you more flexibility when booking your appointments and improved access to emergent care. We will be working as a single entity as it is my fondest wish that this remarkable young dentist will one day take over my practice. This practice is my baby, and I want to know well in advance of my departure that it is in good hands. I am so excited to be sharing it with Dr. Hansford, I know she will serve you well and in turn, she will be as impressed by you as I have always been. Please feel free to book with Dr. Hansford, knowing that we are working together to look after your oral health, and don't let my grey hair fool you, I have still got a lot of dental years left. Wishing everyone good health, time with those you love, and a much brighter 2021! With Gratitude Suzanne Rozon DMD

The Oral Cancer Foundation says 30% of all tooth decay in adults is caused by dry mouth. Here are some products that can help with dry mouth MOUTHWASH: Rinsing for 30 seconds with a mouthwash formulated for dry mouth can provide soothing moisture for up to four hours. You can use these alcohol-free mouthwashes up to five times daily to ease dryness. LOZENGES: Dry mouth lozenges are easily popped anytime your mouth feels dry. Many contain a natural sweetener called xylitol, ...which helps stimulate salvia. Look for these in the diabetic section of the drugstore. SPRAY: Dry mouth sprays are spritzed directly into your mouth for immediate hydration. GEL: Dry mouth gels are applied directly to your tongue so you can spread the gel throughout your mouth to lubricate it. DISCS: Dry mouth discs stick to your teeth or gums to keep your mouth hydrated. They slowly release xylitol, to increase saliva flow, and can even be worn overnight.

As permanent teeth grow in, they may appear darker and more yellow than primary teeth. Don’t worry, this is completely normal. Adult teeth have more dentin than primary teeth, which shows through the translucent enamel layer giving adult teeth a healthy off-white or yellow colour. Once all the primary teeth have been lost, you won’t even notice the colour.

Orthodontics isn’t the only route to straight teeth. Veneers can correct minor misalignments by making crooked teeth appear straighter. Ask us if this is an option for your smile.

It’s hard for children to brush and floss their very back teeth, making their molars prone to decay. Dental sealants are a thin protective layer that can reduce their risk of decay by nearly 80% in molars. They’re best applied as soon as those back teeth erupt, and it’s a quick procedure here at the office. Think of them as raincoats for a child’s teeth! ;)

Do you know what to do if you accidentally lose a tooth? It's important to act quickly. Pick it up carefully and hold it by the top of the tooth not the root and store it in a container of milk, and if you don’t have milk, use saliva or water. Don’t rinse the tooth or let it dry out. Call us right away for further instructions.

New braces wearers should stick to soft foods like yogurt, pasta, or pancakes for the first little while. Once the braces start to feel more comfortable, it's safe to branch out. Cut up more challenging food into smaller bites to allow time to get used to it. Really hard or sticky foods should be avoided. If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call!

People with diabetes have a greater risk of developing oral health problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. Dry mouth and higher blood sugar levels can contribute to these issues. The good news is that by keeping a close eye on blood sugar levels, brushing and flossing twice a day, and scheduling regular hygiene appointments, people with diabetes can significantly reduce the risks and improve their overall health.

Toothbrushes come in many different shapes and sizes. That’s because our mouths are all different. When buying a toothbrush, try and get one that can reach all areas of the mouth. Some people have smaller mouths, so a brush with a smaller head works better. Sometimes it can be challenging to reach the back molars, a toothbrush with angled bristles can help solve this problem. No matter the size of your toothbrush, always opt for a soft-bristled option unless otherwise instructed by your hygienist.

We love treating kids at Rozon Family Dental! We try to make every visit as positive as possible and involve children and parents in their oral health. That includes demonstrating proper brushing and flossing techniques and evaluating and discussing risk factors for tooth decay or other oral health issues. In addition to educating patients and removing stains and plaque from the teeth, a children's dental exam may involve X-rays, sealants, fluoride treatment, pre-orthodontic evaluations, or restorations. Dental restorations come in many shapes and sizes to repair decayed or fractured teeth. Fillings are used to repair smaller areas of decay while larger areas may be addressed with an inlay or an onlay. Crowns are used when there is a large amount of decay or fractures. If the tooth cannot be saved then an implant-retained crown may be used.

It only takes 24-36 hours for plaque to harden into tartar. Once plaque becomes tartar, it is bonded to the tooth enamel and only a dental professional can remove it. However, flossing once a day, every day can help prevent plaque from hardening into tartar.

People sometimes think sports guards are only needed for contact sports like lacrosse, hockey, rugby or martial arts, but athletes playing non-contact sports need protection as well. If there’s a risk of getting hit in the mouth or jaw like baseball, basketball or soccer, or a risk of falling like skateboarding, skiing or snowboarding, then a sports guard is a good investment. Custom sports mouthguards are more durable and last longer than store-bought guards. We take an impression of the mouth and specially make each guard for a better fit. That means the guard is more comfortable - and more likely to be worn! Ask us about custom mouthguards today. Call .

When you brush your teeth, are you also brushing your tongue? It’s a prime spot for bacteria to build up. Bacteria on your tongue can also cause bad breath, so be sure to brush your tongue before rinsing, and you’ll feel fresh and clean.

Storing a toothbrush out in the open especially near the toilet exposes it to airborne germs and bacteria. Instead, store your toothbrush standing up inside a cabinet so that the water can drain in between brushings and it’s a little more protected.

When placing the floss between the teeth, it’s important to be gentle. Snapping the floss into the gums can cause damage and recession. Also, we want to avoid forcing bits of plaque or food between the teeth. Use a gentle zig-zag motion to get the floss into the correct position for flossing and if the floss doesn’t want to go in, don’t force it. Remember to floss every day!

Looking for a quick snack to grab on the way to the beach? How about an apple and a handful of almonds? You’ll get fibre from the apple and it will produce saliva that rinses away bad bacteria and the almonds will give you a boost of calcium and protein. Both are excellent snacks for your teeth.
