New year, new headshot 2020 is rapidly approaching, which will mark my 10th year as an interior designer. That is NUTS!!! As this month comes to close, I find myself reflecting on my career thus far, noting a number of revelations that I wish I could tell my 20 year old self. - College will not prepare you at all for the real world (heard that one before?) - The learning curve is steep. Think like a vertical climb up a rocky mountain that’s permanently foggy. Don’t be discouraged when you (inevitably) stumble. The hard clients are the ones you learn most from. - The Interior Design industry is a never-ending abyss. It’s impossible to know everything, and that’s OK. - Listen to your gut! Move on from those who do not have your best interest in mind, your loyalty will never outweigh the focus on their own benefit. - Managing expectations and a solid execution are the secrets to any successful design, not the pretty colour palette and shiny fixtures. Once you learn this, your life gets SO much easier Hundreds of sleepless nights, a million emails, tens of thousands of miles traveled. Countless lessons learned. This job is crazy, unexpected, difficult and wonderful. I’m so lucky I get to call this career mine. Some big changes happened over the year, and even more crazy changes are right around the corner come January!! Sometimes it’s the simple changes in a renovation that have the biggest impact. Thankfully, @matt_concrete came through to bring a ‘90’s fireplace into 2019 and I can’t get enough! Versatile concrete panels gave me that edgy, modern look that I was going for while making a quiet statement in the room. Add a little spray paint to the old-school polished brass, a grey satin hearth tile, and we’re good to go @ Richmond, British Columbia
