In the coming weeks and months, CRA will launch a series of targeted queries and letters to verify certain elements of the CEWS payments made to certain employers. More comprehensive audits are likely to follow if it is determined that there was misrepresentations in the application process. As a result of the review or audit, the CRA may determine that any or no amount of a wage subsidy claim is justified and send a Notice of Determination to the claimant, or a notice of ass...essment requesting the wage subsidy claimant to repay any or all amounts previously paid plus any applicable interest. In regard to cases of serious non-compliance, significant penalties may be applicable. To support the claim in your wage subsidy application that your revenue for a current reference period has declined sufficiently from the relevant prior reference period, adequate calculations should generally be prepared and maintained through working papers. In situations where a small employer does not maintain detailed monthly records any assumptions made in any calculation should be included in the documentation and available for review if requested.
