As business owners, its good to regularly reflect at where we are today and where were headed. We may be coasting by, but are we really doing what we need to do to get to the life we want to live and the business we want to own? Which is our most profitable product or service, and what should we really promote and focus on? Knowing your numbers is one of those foundational principals that each entrepreneur must possess. Without this, its kind of like shooting at targets in the dark. Yeah we might hit something here and there, but more than likely it wont be the bullseye. Instead, well end up wasting a lot of effort and precious time in the process.

First day back at the gym in many months! Its very easy to make up excuses for not having time to exercise, especially when times are particularly hectic. . When it comes to creating a budget, its essential to estimate your spending as realistically as possible. Here are five budget-related errors commonly made by small businesses, and some tips for avoiding them. 1) Not Setting Goals. Its almost impossible to set spending priorities without clear goals for the coming year. Its important to identify, in detail, your business and financial goals and what you want or need to achieve in your business. 2) Underestimating... Costs. Every business has indirect or incidental costs that dont always make it into the budgetfor whatever reason. A good example of this is buying a new piece of equipment or software. While youve probably accounted for the cost of the equipment in your budget, you may not have remembered to budget time and money required to train staff or for equipment maintenance. 3) Forgetting about Tax Obligations. While your financial statements may seem adequate, dont forget to set aside enough money for tax (e.g. sales tax, payroll tax etc.) owed to province/state, local, and federal entities. Dont make the mistake of thinking this is "money in the bank" and use it to pay for expenses you cant really afford, or worse - including it in next years budget and later finding out that you dont have the cash to pay for your tax obligations. 4) Assuming Revenue Equals Positive Cash Flow. Revenue on the books doesnt always equal cash in hand. Even though youve closed a deal, it may be a long time before youre paid for your services and the money is in your bank account. Its often easier said than done, but dont spend money that you dont have. 5) Failing to Adjust Your Budget. Dont be afraid to update your forecasted expenditures whenever new circumstances affect your business. Several times a year you should set aside time to compare budget estimates against the amount you actually spent, and then adjust your budget accordingly. If you need help setting up a budget to meet your business financial goals, feel free to reach out!
