Rumi Galleries is pleased to present Ray Mead: The Japanese Paper Series, an exhibition of ten exquisite works on paper produced in the years 1989 and 1990. . A member of the Painters Eleven, Ray Mead is celebrated as an artist with a distinct style of painting who played an active role in bringing abstraction to the forefront of Canadian art. The selection of artworks featured in this exhibition are exemplary of the artist’s keen eye for composition and sensitivity to colour.... Using the tones and textures of the Japanese paper as a ground for his lines and gestures, Mead created minimal works that maintain a sense of the artist’s hand. The effortless immediacy of his gestures highlights a mastery of both medium and technique. These works are at once deliberate and intuitive, bringing a sophisticated subtlety to the expressive power of his marks. . Ray Mead: The Japanese Paper Series will be on view from Nov. 14 28, 2020, both online and in-gallery by appointment. . . #raymead #painterseleven #canadianart #canadianartist #painting #worksonpaper #japanesepaper #rumigalleries #oakville #exhibition #wesupportcanadianart #trusttheexperts See more

For @art_toronto we are pleased to present a special group of artworks by Invader. . Invader is the pseudonym of the renowned yet anonymous French street artist best known for his pixelated mosaics of icons from the video game Space Invaders. . Among the ranks of street artists like Banksy and Shepard Fairey, the artist has invaded urban spaces on a global scale, bringing pop culture imagery to the streets of targeted cities. Describing his work as urban acupuncture,... Invader installs 20 to 50 of these Space Invaders in chosen cities using guerilla tactics which the artist refers to as invasion waves. . The artist understands his Space Invaders project as a way of liberating art from museums and galleries but also as a means of freeing the Space Invaders from their video games and TV screens and bringing them into our physical world. . In addition to his street art, Invader also creates editions in order to finance his invasions. Aladdin Sane (Yellow) is a nod to David Bowie’s album and alter ego, Aladdin Sane a play-on-words of A Lad Insane. The work depicts Bowie’s iconic red and blue lightning bolt on the face of a pixelated invader. . When asked why he chose Space Invaders as the central figures for his project, Invader explained, In my own eyes, they are the perfect icons of our time, a time where digital technologies are the heartbeat of our world . You can view this special presentation by visiting our virtual booth at Arttoronto.ca, on our website at rumigalleries.com or in person at our gallery in Oakville. . This week in our Masterworks series we are highlighting Jean McEwen’s Le Drapeau Inconnu 3rd Theme, No.8, an outstanding painting that emerged from a critical period in the artist’s oeuvre. . McEwen'spaintings from 1963 reveal the gradual development of a cruciform that he explored further in 1964 in what curator Constance Naubert-Riserdescribesas "a key series that represents the culminating point of all his previous investigations." . In 1963, the House of Commons i...n Ottawa had been debating the subject of a new national flag for Canada. When none of the proposed designs could be agreed upon, Canadian artists were called upon to submit designs. . Commons debates continued throughout the year that McEwen worked on the Drapeau Inconnu series as the final selection was not made until December 1964. The title of the series "Drappeau Inconnu" or "Unknown Flag" pays tribute to the eagerly anticipated but long-undecided flag. . The series consists of 23 paintings. Upon completion, McEwen categorized the works under five themes based on compositional structure. The cruciform varies from one theme to the next. It is quite complex in the first theme and more obvious in the second theme. Le Drapeau Inconnu - 3rd theme, No. 8,as indicated by the title, falls under the third theme which focuses onthe subtle tension of the marginal planes pushing the corners toward the centre of the painting. . Central to McEwen's work is the sensuality of the painted surface. The artist poured and layered paint onto his canvases, creating surface textures through the stratification of opaque and translucent pigments and varnish. . Le Drapeau Inconnu - 3rd Theme, No. 8 is an exceptional example of McEwen's exploration of the spatial possibilities of colour. It establishes McEwen as a master colourist with a keen eye for composition and a significant contributor to Canadian abstract art. . #masterworksseries #jeanmcewen #canadianart #canadianartist #painting #rumigalleries #wesupportcanadianart #trusttheexperts See more

This week we are continuing our (bi-weekly) Masterworks series with two exceptional canvases by Canadian artist Paul Fournier. Fournier is a prolific painter and a compelling artistic voice in Canadian art. With a career spanning over fifty years, he is celebrated for his vividly coloured and lively abstract compositions. . Fournier entered the Canadian art scene as a third-generation non-figurative painter. Quickly recognized for his expressive forms and compared to the Fauv...ists for his use of high-keyed colours, Fournier was dubbed an exotic modernist by New York art critic David Kuspit. . Secret Realm I (SOLD) and Spring Song exemplify Fournier’s mature work and the style for which he is best known. Fournier’s canvases embody the energy of the natural and cosmic worlds from which he draws his inspiration. They explore ideas of beauty, wonder and the mysteries of nature. Intuitive gestures and ambiguous forms emerge from expanses of vibrant colour. The paintings evoke visions of tropical gardens and underwater flora, but ultimately remain committed to abstraction. It is through a skillful use of colour and experienced understanding of the materiality of paint that Fournier distills from his experiences of nature the poetic quality that is infused into his paintings. . Fournier has exhibited extensively throughout his career. His works are held in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; and in many public, University, corporate and private collections in North America and Europe. . #masterworksseries #paulfournier #canadianart #canadianartist #contemporaryart #painting #rumigalleries #wesupportcanadianart #trusttheexperts See more
