GROUP RUNS: UPDATE As you probably heard, our government has tightened restrictions again on gatherings as of this past weekend. Last week we sent out an email and had social media posts about group runs starting up again. However, we are going to dial it back and hold off from meeting in a big group at this time. That being said, please see below for an update on a few things: - We want to encourage you to get out for runs/walks on your own and with friends! We’re opening up... the store for you to grab a quick sip of water and use washrooms any time until 6pm when we close during the week. - We will continue with our limit of 6 people in the store at all times. - We won’t have the key box out, but if you want a place to meet, change into your running clothes before, then please feel free to stop by! - Store hours will continue to close at 6pm during the week. However, staff will be around a bit after if needed. This isn’t how we envisioned getting our open group runs back, but we hope you are still continuing to run/walk and encourage you to swing by and say hi anytime! And if you and your friends want to meet at the store for a run, then come on down (in smaller groups and socially distanced of course!). We also want to say thanks again for all of the support you’ve shown over the past few months. We’re encouraged by all the new runners and walkers stopping by and can’t wait to get things back to normal with group runs and clinics!

We still want to make every effort to keep everyone safe and that is why we've decided to not have the runs leave from the store. Instead we will be meeting at Churchill Park in Westdale! More specifically, by the club house at the corner of Parkside Dr. and Devon Pl. This will give us plenty of room to practice social distancing before we head out for the run. WE’VE GOT EXCITING NEWS! Runner’s Den Hamilton is expanding and as of July 1st, now run the Runner’s Den Paris location! We’ve known Deb for over 20 years and she was one of the first runners to join our group runs here in Hamilton. She opened the store in Paris and has done an amazing job over the years and building the running community there. We can’t wait to continue the work that she has done.... We have lots of great ideas for the store, which includes running clinics, races (when they can happen), events, etc. As we mentioned, we officially took over the store as of July 1st and will be making a few updates and opening by late July/early August. TEMPO TUESDAY! FINAL WEEK of our Virtual Running Clinic. Thanks so much for following along! DETAILS:... Warm-up: 8-15 min. easy jog! Workout: 10-20min TEMPO Cool-down: 8-15 min. easy jog! What’s a TEMPO? Tempo runs are used to increase endurance. Generally if you were to run as fast as you can for 60min straight, that would roughly be around the pace to use for a tempo run. You might be wondering, what in the world would that pace be for me, I’m only running 30-40mins at my max? Well, if you’ve never done this before, try running just a bit faster than your regular easy pace. Don’t sprint! But, get those legs moving a bit quicker than your easy running pace! With a lot of uncertainty surrounding large scale events in Ontario this Fall due to Covid-19, we’ve made the tough decision to turn the Hamilton Marathon Road2Hope into a Virtual Event. This is not how we had envisioned the fate of this year’s race and it was our true hope to be able to provide you with an actual event! That being said, we hope to offer something very special as you build up towards our run this year. Our race weekend has always been about creating an event ...that local charities can use as a way to raise funds for the amazing things they are doing in our city and beyond. With charities seeing a drop in fundraising dollars, we want to put on an event to help them! As well as supporting charities there is a lot in it for you! Included in the cost of the event is a 12 week Virtual Training Clinic customized to your fitness level and race distance, multiple weekly gear giveaways totalling $8,000 in product value, a special discount code for 15% OFF all in-line shoes and apparel through the Runner’s Den online shop, and much more! We are closely monitoring the regulations set by provincial and federal leaders. If in-person large scale events are allowed to happen, we will set up a chip-timed race within those regulations. There are hundreds of people in need and currently there is a very low stock of used shoes to give them. We’re opening up the store to take donations of lightly used (or new!) shoes and we’ll make sure they get to someone in need.... TEMPO THURSDAY? Okay, this isn’t a Tempo workout as we missed posting our Tempo Tuesday. However, we have something different for you! Week 4 of our Virtual Running Clinic is almost done. It’s never to late to sign-up for FREE and get Tuesday/Thursday workouts and long run information sent to your inbox every Sunday!... DETAILS: Warm-up: 8-12min. easy jog Workout: 10-15 x 1min. FAST, 1min easy jog! Cool-down: 5-10min. easy jog What’s FAST? Interval workouts are when you run fast for a short duration and follow it up with a recovery, and then repeat that a certain number of times depending on the goal of the workout. For this week, try running hard for 1min followed by a 1min recovery after each hard interval. Depending on which option you choose will determine the number of sets you will do. As a reminder, don’t make the hard interval an all-out sprint. Focus on getting your legs moving quicker than the pace of your tempo on Tuesday.
