Day 13 of our December Advent Calendar Modified D1 Shoulder Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Exercise:... The purpose of a PNF exercise is to increase the overall length of a muscle while positively influencing neuromuscular efficiency. This allows for an increase in flexibility at the joint as well as an increase in the general range of motion in all planes. Setup: 1. Stand on a resistance band so that it is parallel to the outside of your body on the side opposite of your targeted shoulder. 2. Wrap the resistance band around the hand of the affected extremity at a mild tension.(Your affected extremity should be reaching across your torso, towards your opposite hip) Phase 1 of 3: 1 Bring your arm across body, raising your elbow up to 90 degrees while keeping your shoulder stable and palm facing behind you. 2Hold for 3 seconds. 3Do the opposite to return to the start or progress to phase 2 below. Phase 2 of 3: 1Keeping your elbow at 90 degrees, rotate your arm upwards so that your palm is now facing forward. 2Hold for 3 seconds. 3Do the opposite and return to the start or progress to phase 3 below. Phase 3 of 3: 1Take your fist and push it toward the ceiling. 2Hold for 10 seconds. 3Do the opposite of phase 3, phase 2 and lastly phase 1 to return to starting position. Once you’ve mastered each phase, combine them for 1 quick exercise. This exercise should feel like you are pulling a sword out of your scabbard, raising it up! Day 12 of our December Advent Calendar! As we transition back to lockdown mode, we know our hips could use some attention with the long days of working from home, binging Netflix, and keeping warm on the couch ahead of us. One of our favourite exercises for the hips is the 90/90. This is a FANTASTIC exercise that allows for mobility through multiple planes of movement (by moving from one position to the next, the front hip is placed in flexion and external rotation while t...he back hip is placed in abduction and internal rotation) and with each full cycle, allows for stretching of multiple muscles groups of the hip. So how does one perform this bad boy? Patrick, our in-house RMT breaks er down! 1Sit on the floor with your back in a neutral position 2Place one leg out in front of you with your hip and knee both at 90-degree angles (the outside of your leg should be touching the floor.) 3Place the other leg out to the side with the hip and knee at 90-degree angles. (The inside of this leg should be touching the floor.) 4Place your hands on either side of your body. 5Keeping your back in a neutral position and your shoulders square to the ground, slowly lower your torso towards your knee. 6Raise up and do the same towards the opposite direction. Hold each direction x 3 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
