DYK June is the peak of turtle nesting season in Ontario? As turtles begin to emerge from hibernation they will be making their way across roads to find mates a...nd nesting sites. You can help by slowing down in areas near lakes and wetlands. Always follow these 5 tips for safely moving turtles (including snapping turtles) off of the road: 1. Put your safety first and beware of oncoming traffic 2. Always move the turtle in the direction it was heading 3. Never grab a turtle by its tail, you could seriously injure it 4. Use a car mat, blanket or piece of cardboard to slide the turtle across the road to safety 5. If you have to pick up the turtle, do so by the back of the shell, above the hind legs. Avoid grabbing it by the sides of the shell as their necks are long and could reach around to bite you if scared (they don’t know you are trying to help)
