If the top of your hotwater tank looks like the pic below, it means the tank is leaking with a small pinhole leak. In some cases I have seen the back seam start to weaken, which can "unzip", causing terrible flooding. However the back seam is generally not visible until the tank has been removed. I replaced this one (just in time) with a new Rinnai RUR199 tankless with retro fit recirculation so the customer has faster hotwater and saves water....
