Let's talk about hidden disabilities. Hidden disabilities are those that may not be visually evident or obvious. These disabilities range from chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, learning impairments, Autism, Auto-immune diseases, and more. People with invisible disabilities can often face prejudice from those who are able-bodied, as people outside of the disabled community may not take invisible disabilities seriously. Therefore, those with hidden disabilities may ...face difficulties when it comes to seeking the accommodations or extra support that they need. In order to be more supportive to people with these types of disabilities, we must remember the importance of asking, rather than assuming. Individuals with invisible disabilities may find it easier to hide how they are feeling, in order to avoid being judged or being ridiculed. Small gestures such as asking how someone is feeling, rather than assuming that they are okay, can go a long way. That being said, it is important to respect the privacy of those who are disabled. If you have a loved one with a disability, avoid offering up advice or information about their condition, without asking if it is okay first. Another way to be a better ally to those with hidden disabilities is by being open to making accommodations when necessary. A great way to accommodate a friend with an invisible disability is by asking them which environments they feel most comfortable in. For example, those with invisible disabilities such as mental illnesses can find loud spaces like parties to be emotionally taxing, and may prefer to hang out in a quiet place with a small group of friends.
