NATIVE ORCHIDS OF VANCOUVER ISLAND with Sasha Kubicek Victoria Natural History Society Botany Night. Join your host James Miskelly at 7:30 tomorrow night Tuesday October 20th. *You must register ahead through the VNHS Calendar. https://zoom.us//regi/tJMtceqgqz8oH9a_5J4Jm_fy-OrG0S3OjGWn Sasha may call himself an amateur botanist, but his knowledge is truly incredible when it comes to native plant species (especially orchids) and local ecosystems. His special interest in orch...ids started long ago and by age 10 he was already propagating orchids! (More photos to come of this amazing time). Since those early years, he has been exploring Vancouver Island for native orchid species (especially rare colour forms), speaking at orchid societies and garden groups, and protecting orchid habitats. Through his orchid habitat work, he has developed a deep passion and knowledge for our remaining wild places on Vancouver Island and the plants and other life within them. Sasha co-manages Sea Bluff Farm with his wife Robin Tunnicliffe and also works at Saanich Native Plants. We're delighted to have Sasha as part of the nursery team and are looking forward to many years ahead learning and working together. In support of talks like these, please consider a Victoria Natural History Society membership. There are loads of amazing nature-related talks every month! http://www.vicnhs.bc.ca/?page_id=1423

Have you ever seen 4,132 native plants placed and ready to be put in the ground? Well feast your eyes on this beauty: @stoneridge_wetland If you haven't visited Stoneridge, you are certainly missing out. This 2-acre wetland is a hidden gem in View Royal that has been well taken care of by the Stoneridge Stewards, a dedicated group of volunteers who live next door. They were the ones that discovered an invasion of the plant Parrot's Feather, and reported it to the munici...pality (see photos 8 & 9). View Royal demonstrated that the health of these natural spaces are important assets to the community by providing financial support to remove and replant a large portion of the wetland affected by the invasive plant. Wetlands are really critical to our ecosystem even though they’re often seen as a detriment that should just be filled in with housing or farmland, said Mark Cacovic, co-leader of the group. We were proud to be the supplier of the 500 trees & shrubs, and 3,600 sedges, rushes, grasses, perennial forbs and wildflowers. All grown by hand locally, right here in your community. From major planting projects to backyard ponds, we look forward to contributing to wetland restoration in the community. Go check it out! #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocal #wetland #restoration #viewroyal #yyj #choosenativeplants #yyjnews @bcwildlifefederation @victoria_news @victoria_buzz @goldstreamgazette

Seeding at the Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve went very well yesterday. We're trying a variety of site prep techniques including harrowing ahead of seeding and have some control plots set up as well. Site prep ahead of seeding is an important part of success. Site prep approaches are always determined by what conditions you're starting with. In this case we used harrowing, mowing, and raking to reduce biomass ahead of seeding. Biomass, or built up thatch, can inhibit seedling ...growth by blocking light, seed:soil contact, and blocking small germinants in spring. Biomass also has a cooling affect on the soil. Seed germination is improved with good seed to soil contact. Year to year, biomass removal can help with keeping the forb (wildflowers that aren't graminoids) to graminoid (grasses, sedges, rushes) ratio in balance. There's a prescribed burn scheduled this season as well. We used sand as a carrier to dilute the seed ahead of spreading and handbroadcast over the different areas. This project is being led by Andrew Macdougall @uofguelph and biologist Carrina Maslovat. Check out some of their research about Garry Oak Ecosystems. One of my favourite papers is Defining Conservation Strategies with Historical Perspectives: a Case Study from a Degraded Oak Grassland Ecosystem (Conservation Biology, 2004). #seeding #nativeseeds #scienceisawesome #restoration #prairieoak #garryoakecosystems #prescribedfire #harrow #nativeplants #cowichanterritory See more

Heading up to the Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve for meadow seeding this weekend. We're trialing some native seed mixes with University of Guelph and other researchers. Special thank you to Carrina Maslovat, Irvin Banman, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Each of these buckets is enough seed for about 1000m2, together they'll cover about 3/4 of an acre. We'll report back about the seeding! #nativeseedproduction #nativeplantsyyj #nativeplantscowichan #nativeseedsvancouverisland #universityofguelph #natureconservancyofcanada #cowichangarryoakpreserve #cgop #nativeseedmixes #nativeseed
