Today, Nova Scotia celebrates our second annual Military Family Appreciation Day. This year has been particularly challenging for members of our armed forces ...and many are unaware of the sacrifices our military families make while their loved ones are on missions abroad and here at home. While they may not wear the uniform - they are just as courageous and play an incredibly important role in the journey of active members across our province. Our military families deserve our sincere thanks and appreciation for supporting the safety and protection of all Canadians.

Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, and Mark Furey, Attorney General and Minister of Justice for Nova Scotia, announced a j...oint independent review of the April tragedy in Nova Scotia. The review will conduct a broad investigative analysis of the April 18-19 events. Justice Minister Mark Furey says: The Government of Nova Scotia is committed to ensuring that the families and all Nova Scotians get the answers they deserve. We have heard the calls for an independent and impartial review into why and how this happened, and for timely recommendations that will make our communities safer. This joint review will achieve these outcomes. The three panel members the Honourable J. Michael MacDonald, the Honourable Anne McLellan and Ms. Leanne Fitch will provide an interim public report by Feb. 28 and a final report by Aug. 31. Today, our government announced that public school students across the province will return to class on Tuesday, Sept 8. The back to school plan is supported by... public health, the IWK Health Centre and various education partners. Developed with survey feedback from more than 28,000 parents and students, and input from union and education partners, our plan outlines public health guidelines and enhanced safety measures for students and staff. It also includes measures to enhance student learning. While overall, learning at-home during the spring went well, parents said there were some challenges, like access to technology. As a result, our government has also invested $4 million to secure 14,000 computers to support student learning for those with limited or no access to technology. In September, students, families and staff can expect: plans to support enhanced cleaning, physical distancing and situations specific to schools in their area, classrooms to be reorganized to increase spacing, treating a class as a bubble to minimize contact with other students, enhanced cleaning on school buses as well as all school bus riders and drivers being required to wear a mask - and much more. Over the last month, our Liberal Caucus has been visiting businesses across the province. These hard-working entrepreneurs are our friends and neighbors - and now, more than ever, they need our support.

Today, July 13, Nova Scotia is reporting no new cases of COVID-19. Three active cases remain in the province. I have been encouraged to see many Nova Scotians e...njoying their summer and supporting local businesses while following public health advice. As we continue into the warmer months, we can’t get complacent. Always remember to keep a physical distance of 6 feet when and where required and practice good hand washing and other hygiene. Wearing a mask is also a great way to curb the spread of COVID-19. By working together, we can continue to keep each other safe while still getting out and enjoying our summer. Today marks the end of pride month, but we will continue to recognize individuality, authenticity and acceptance throughout Nova Scotia every day of the year.... In 1978, artist and designer Gilbert Baker was commissioned by San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the US, to make a flag for the city's upcoming pride celebrations. Baker, a prominent gay rights activist, gave a nod to the stripes of the American flag but drew inspiration from the rainbow to reflect the many groups within the gay community. The pride flag was later amended in 2018 by artist Daniel Quasar who wanted to make it even more inclusive. Known as the Progress Pride flag, it includes five arrow-shaped lines to the six-coloured Rainbow Flag. The new flag includes black and brown stripes to represent marginalized LBGTQ+ communities of colour, while the addition of pink, light blue, and white represent the trans community.
