Anyone else scrunch their nose, furrow their brow, and tilt their head in a sort of "weeeeellllllllllll ACTUALLY.....!" face any time they hear this!? . Along t...hese lines and also on the list of things NOT to say to a new parent when they share their birth story are the classic (and overused) . "Well at least your baby is healthy!" . "It doesn't matter how baby arrived, they're finally here safe!" . And "Well you never have to do it again so you can forget about it!" . The list of cringe worthy things people say to new parents when they express displeasure with their birth experience is a long one. . The problem with those, perhaps well meaning, statements is that they completely dismiss the birthing persons experience and feelings, erasing them from the equation. It tells them that even though the birth may have left them feeling hurt, shocked or even violated, they shouldn't complain because their baby is healthy and this is the only important thing. They also ignore the complex relationship between a parent and their baby, and the impact of the birth experience on their future mental and physical health. Holding space for every part of a birthing persons experience can be the critical difference in them receiving the support and care they need to ensure their future health and success as a new parent. . If a birthing person says their birth was traumatic, it was traumatic. Full stop. And a healthy baby is NOT the only thing that matters.
