Birth can be a journey of empowerment for each person involved. Birthing people dig deep into their reserves of energy, face their fears, advocate for themselves and ask for what they need. Supportive partners watch observantly, witnessing the power of birth and offering practical, emotional, and physical comfort measures. As a doula, I have been so honoured to watch the sacred dance that occurs in a delivery room between the birthing person and their support system. A whisp...er of "I'm so proud of you", a compassionate touch on a hand or face, a giggle at a shared moment of excitement all speak to the sacredness of the room. Each person present chooses in the moment how to show up for the experience of bringing life forth, and as the dance sweeps participants along in its energy, we all breathe together in a hush of wonder as baby is lifted onto mama's chest wide eyed and covered in vernix. The world falls away, and there is just the family, discovering together who they will now be.
