March is...PET POISON PREVENTION MONTH!! Many of our favorite foods, herbs and plants we love at home are poisonous to our pets. Making sure that your food, medication and household cleaners are properly stored safely will go leaps and bounds in protecting your fur babies! Some common household items that are dangerous for our pets are: Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, dairy products, Ibuprofen (Advil), essential oils, cleaning products, dryer sheets, vinegar, alcohol, very salty foods and many more. If by chance your pet does ingest any of these, please call your veterinarian immediately to find out what the protocol is for possible toxicity. We here at Sage Hill Animal Hospital are always happy to assist you and your critters, so when in doubt please give us a call :)

If you think this summer has been a hot one, so do your dogs. They are at risk for heat stroke just like us. It is important to watch your dog for signs of heatstroke. These symptoms include: Heavy panting Glazed eyes Rapid heartbeat... Difficulty breathing Excessive thirst Lethargy, fever Dizziness Lack of coordination Profuse salivation Vomiting Deep red or purple tongue Seizures Unconsciousness If you notice any of these symptoms, it is extremely important that you contact a veterinarian immediately. Dogs that are predisposed to heat stroke are puppies, senior dogs, the underweight, the overweight, dogs with heart or lung disease, and brachycephalic breeds (pugs, boston terriers, french bull dogs, any dog or cat with a short muzzle). In extreme heat, limit outside time and make sure that there is always fresh water available. If your pet seems warm, you can cool them down by providing ample shade (NOT a dog house, this can in fact make the heat worse), water (with ice if possible), by dipping their feet in cool water, and applying towel wrapped ice packs or cool water to their head, neck, and chest. Do not rely on a fan, as these do not cool dogs as well as they cool us. And most importantly, do NOT leave your pet in hot car, even with the windows cracked. Call us at 403-567-8878 if you need any help or further inquiries. See more

Helpful Tips for Finding your Lost Fur Baby When a pet is lost, panic sets in and we dont always search effectively. Below are some helpful tips to follow if this unfortunate scenario occurs: 1. Fliers. Make them right away. Include your phone number and a brief description of the pet. 2. Check with the Calgary shelters every day. If an animal they pick up has identification, they will keep it for 10 days. If no id, they are only required to keep them for four. So check ever...y day! 3. Call local veterinarians. People who have found pets will often report it to local veterinarian offices. Calgary also has emergency hospitals, check with them as someone could have brought them there injured. 4. Put out lost pet ads. YYC Pet Recovery is a reputable one in Calgary. Others include: Lost and Found Calgary and the Calgary Humane Society. Use Social Media Sites, especially local ones. Facebook, Twitter, Local Pet Pages are all fantastic resources. Also check Found Pets Ads. 5. If you suspect your pet may have been stolen, report it to the police. Cats: Tend not to wander too far from home, usually within a 10-house radius. Knock on the doors around you and give each a flier. Ask if you can check their property. Cats will often hide in the most unsuspecting places. It is best to search for lost cats late at night or early in the morning. Bring food or some other treat that usually entices them to come out. Make noises that usually makes your cat come to you; and pause to listen after callingcats can be trapped and meowing. Check your own house very carefully. Cats can be hiding in the most unusual spots or have crawled into a small space you were not aware of. Select some things your cat likes the smell of and place outside. As well, place food outside at the same time every night. Dogs: Tend to run farther away: greater than 5 miles in a few days and greater than 100 miles in a few weeks. Scour your neighborhood and bring any toys, leashes, treats, food or companion pets that may entice your dog to come out. ***Beware of scams. Do not give out too much information in your fliers and bring someone with your whenever youve gotten a call to come see if a found pet is yours. See more

Nowadays there is a lot of confusion regarding insurance for our pets. Which company is the best and how do we understand all those fees and restrictions? Additionally, we at Sage Hill Animal Hospital have formed our own Wellness Care Plans in order to give clients some relief on yearly services. We will attempt to help you differentiate between a Wellness Plan and Insurance and which will be better for you, your pocket book, and your pet. The basic rule of thumb when it come...s to insurance is: ASK ASK ASK. Ask as many questions as it takes to get clear, defined answers. Some of the questions you should ask about are: 1. Is there additional fees for routine and wellness coverage? 2. What are the premiums, deductibles, co-pays and maximum payouts? 3. Does it cover accidents/injuries and illnesses? Definition of each 4. Does it have continual coverage for chronic diseases? 5. Does it have a good reputation? 6. Does it have a strong underwriter? 7. Are the premiums affordable? Do they pay claims in a timely fashion? 8. Are there limits to the amount of claims you can file? What happens if you go over that? 9. What are the exclusions and requirements? Are they reasonable? 10. If looking at an accident only policy, read carefully so you know what you are getting. Pet insurance companies are businesses. Their bottom line is money. They can and will change your rates and terms. Make sure you are aware of what you are purchasing and make sure to read the terms and conditions of your policy. Wellness Plans, on the other hand, are not insurance. They are a set of services you will need in the coming year anyway. You pay up front for those services and they are then covered and pre-paid for. There are no premiums, there are no co-pays, no deductables, nothing hidden. You simply sign up, pay, and then redeem your services at a discounted (already paid for) rate. They include services such as: blood collections, vaccines, fecal analysis, spay/neuter, nail trimming, ear cytology, Dental polishing and cleaning, etc. Basically, services your pet will require within one year anyway. They do not cover accidents and chronic conditions beyond the list of services covered within the one year. As an example, you will not pay for your office visit anytime.whether it is an accident, vaccine appointment, or a test for a chronic condition. If you have any questions, we encourage you to call us at 403-567-8878 or have conversation with your insurance provider

Summer is here, and most lawns need a little help looking green again. Before you fertilize your lawn, it is important to educate yourself on the possible effects it could have on your pet. We recommend keeping your pet away from the fertilizer for at least three days from the time you have applied it. Fertilizer poisoning can cause lack of coordination, inappropriate urination, seizures, and if not caught early enough, death. If you suspect your pet has ingested fertilizer bring them to a vet clinic as soon as possible. Time is extremely crucial in these situations. Please do not hesitate to call us at (403)-567-8878 if you have any questions!

Our pets have teeth that require dental care. Can you imagine if you didnt brush your teeth for a year? Periodontal disease causes bacteria to settle under the gums. This bacteria can be carried throughout your pets body in the bloodstream, and can be associated with damage to internal organs. The first sign of periodontal disease is bad breath, and it can lead to painful teeth and gums, which will affect your pets ability to eat. We want to help. Its Dental Month at the clinic! Call us at (403)-657-8878 for more information!

Here in Calgary, we welcome warm weather with open arms. Unfortunately, with the warmer weather comes a skin infection called hot spots. These are formed by a large amount of licking to one specific area. These spots come up quickly; just 10 minutes of licking can lead to a pretty big hot spot. Luckily, we are here to help. A hot spot will look red and wet when fresh, and dry and scabby when it is resolving. If you think your dog may have a hotspot, a vet visit may be necessary, as there could be a worse underlying skin infection involved. If it is just a hot spot, treatment is easy, with it usually resolving using a topical medication. Please feel free to call us at (403)-567-8878 with any questions you may have. Wed love to hear from you!

Giardia is the genus of a protozoan parasite infectious to both humans and pets all over the world. These parasites can live in the outside world as cysts for months. Contaminated water is the classic source for a Giardia infection, and Diarrhea is a classic symptom, though not all those infected will exhibit this. There are three types of Giardia parasites, with Type A being able to infect humans. This makes it extremely important to take caution when handling fresh feces and keeping an eye on your pup to make sure that they do not drink from contaminated water sources. This parasite especially likes damp environments out of direct sunlight. Please call us at (403)-567-8878 if you have any questions!

Its tough not to think of these ticks as ticking time bombs, with more and more potential to explode in a warming climate. There used to be a commonly held belief that ticks couldnt survive below a certain minimum temperature, preventing their spread to northern climates. Now researchers are rethinking the relationship between tick populations and temperature. Summer is here and its time to get tick-ed off!! Ticks in the grass everywhere have woken up. Now is a good time t...o think about how to protect your pet. Lyme disease is one of the most common tick-transmitted diseases in the world. It is caused by a spirochete (bacteria) species and when infection leads to disease in dogs, the dominant clinical feature is recurrent lameness due to inflammation of the joints. There may also be a lack of appetite and depression. More serious complications include damage to the kidneys, and rarely, heart or nervous system disease. If possible, avoid allowing your dog to roam in tick-infested wooded areas where Lyme disease is common. Please contact us at 403-567-8878 with any questions you may have regarding tick born diseases and their prevention and we would be happy to assist. Like always keeping your pets safe is our priority! See more

Leptospira organisms are transmitted through contact with infected animals, their urine, or contaminated soil and water. Leptospirosis is considered the most common infectious disease transmitted from animals to humans worldwide. Affected dogs can remain apparently healthy and shed leptospires in their urine, increasing the risk of transmission to other dogs or to humans. Some of these dogs develop chronic progressive kidney disease, leading to chronic renal failure. Manifestation of the disease in humans varies from mild flu-like symptoms with fever to signs of severe liver, brain, kidney, and lung damage. Prevention is key! Please call us at (403)-567-8878 with any questions you may have regarding Leptospirosis or the vaccine, and we would be happy to help. Keeping your pets safe is our priority!

The Echinococcus tapeworm will infect your dog, but is fatal to humans. Your dog may become infected by ingesting the feces of an infected coyote or a small rodent. This can easily be spread to humans through saliva. 20-30% of coyotes on Nose Hill are infected, and 80-90% of coyotes in Bowmont park are infected. Protect yourself and your pup, and get your dog de-wormed! Contact us at (403)-567-8878 to book an appointment.

Although chocolate may be one of our favorite treats, its best to think twice before we share our favorite treat with an eager pet and reach for the dog treats instead. Sometimes we share these treats with dogs and sometimes our dogs share these treats without our permission. In most chocolate ingestion cases, Chocolate is directly toxic because it contains theobromine and caffeine and they both produce similar effects, but the theobromine lasts substantially longer. The mor...e chocolate liquor there is in a product, the more theobromine there is. This makes baking chocolate the worst for pets, followed by semisweet and dark chocolate, followed by milk chocolate, followed by chocolate flavored cakes or cookies. Theobromine can cause Vomiting, Diarrhea, Hyperactivity, Tremors, Seizures, and in the worst-case Death. It takes nearly four days for the effects of chocolate to work its way out of a dogs system. If the chocolate was only just eaten, it is possible to induce vomiting; otherwise, hospitalization and support are needed. To know more information about the dangers of chocolate toxicity, come visit Sage Hill Animal Hospital to learn more about how to keep your pet safe. See more

All pets love to chew, but swallowing anything other than food can be hazardous for them. Foreign bodies block the bowel and prevent food from passing. At best, this means your pet slowly starves, but most likely complications set in. if blockage stretches the gut wall. it can cut off the blood circulation. This causes the piece of bowel to die off. its very important to keep anything they shouldnt swallow out of their reach!
