From the Gift of a Long Life: Century Club members 90+ interviewed for their take on life and aging: "Firstly, develop and maintain a positive outlook on life -... you’ll find everything about life more enjoyable. If you have been an active volunteer, keep doing it. #ICYMI - Summary of the CanAge webinar on violence and elder abuse prevention: - Violence and elder abuse prevention requires integrating different lenses. Silo...s prevent us from taking an intersectional look at elder abuse, which is detrimental to the work and can create more harm to older adults. A rights-based approach is an important part of elder abuse prevention work. - Older adults are part of the solution and must be included in the conversation and the work at F/P/T and local levels. - Need to develop an Elder Abuse Strategy. Canada is unique among OECD countries in not having a proper strategy addressing aging in its many facets, including violence-prevention. - It is important that older adults know that they are entitled to be treated as competent adults, they have rights and a place in society. - In spite of education and awareness work, lots of older adults still think that elder abuse does not happen in their community or do not recognize it for what it is. - Data collection is important, particularly disaggregated data, but it's not the end all-be all. Stakeholders and government know enough by now, instead of spending time collecting more data, it is time to act. - Seniors are not children. Capable adults have the right to live however they want, so mandatory reporting might not be the answer, it also has ramifications re: privacy and confidentiality. - However, implementing mandatory response is important (designated bodies with a mandate and legal obligation to look into a situation & address elder abuse concerns) - Having a national elder abuse strategy would also help with the long-term sustainability of programs and services that work. Currently, the fiscal and physical limitations that F/P/T and local networks are experiencing are huge and are an additional obstacle to building a unified voice. Thanks to all the panelists (Canadian Centre for Elder Law, Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario, SeniorsNL and Office of the Seniors Advocate) for your insight and frankness about this complex question and thanks to CanAge for hosting!
