How do I approach a GSAR scene or Searchers? The simple answer is don't. In the past search teams used to use spontaneous volunteers on searches, but now a days this is not the case, it has to do with a couple of things, firstly trained searchers are covered by insurance in case of injury or death, spontaneous volunteers are not. Secondly, searchers are trained in policies, procedures, tactics and equipment that the volunteers may not be familiar with. Can I search the area on my own? We would prefer that you dont. Searchers search for clues that lead to the subject. Having well intentioned people search an area only compromises the area of interest and complicates the search. What if I have information that maybe pertinent to the search? Bring it to the the attention of the Incident Commander (IC, an RCMP officer who is in charge of the scene) at the Command Post. Failing that, inform any searcher, they will direct you or the information to the IC. Why do I see a lot of inaction at the Command Vehicle? Just like any other "job", there are a lot of moving parts and tasks at a search site. We have Command, logistics staff and transport personnel that are employed around the Command Vehicle. The search teams are usually waiting to be deployed, returned from a task or deployed around the area carrying out their tasks. Well, what can I do to help? Join a local GSAR team, most teams are in need of volunteers especially searchers. You will be trained. If you have a certain skillset that would be beneficial to the team, make sure you let someone know. GSAR jobs: Searcher Team Leader Search Manager (Planning and Operations) Logistics and staff Transport Communications Operators Mapping Software Operators Administration software operators Electronic Search Specialists... To name a few...
