Community Project Success! Sierra McDonald in Norman Wells wrote an advocacy letter for the need to have a treatment centre in the NWT and addressed it to all M...LA’s. When we asked her why she felt it was important to give back to her community in this way she told us: a lot of us teens today see people struggling with their addictions, I felt like we all needed a little push into stepping forward and doing something Below is the letter she submitted: Dear MLAs and Ministers My name is Sierra McDonald, I am a grade 11 student who currently lives in Tegh (Norman Wells) and I attended the FOXY Peer Leader Retreat in August 2020 as a peer apprentice. FOXY is a revolutionary program for young women and gender diverse youth that promotes mental and sexual health as well as healthy relationships. At the retreat we were all asked to choose a community project when we return home; like picking up garbage around your community or making kits for the homeless. My mind immediately went to writing this letter as we desperately need a treatment centre in the North. The Northwest Territories and Nunavut have the highest suicide rates in Canada. When you’re under the influence you can make some dangerous decisions like hurting yourself, others, even commit suicide while under the influence. Lots of substance abuse takes place in our smaller communities and most people don’t know about it. A treatment centre could help cut down these rates within the NWT and NU if people knew there was help out there for them. A treatment centre in the NWT can cut down the cost of travel and treatment costs, everyone can't fly down south for this and we should have to go so far to do this. There is no support for people in treatment down south because their family live in the NWT. Northerners also face a lot of racism when in Southern Canada as they don’t understand us or our culture. Right now people would also need to isolate when they return to the NWT and that can be stressful. The cities down south are too big and far away, and it could lead to more drug use. If we had our own treatment centre more people would seek help and others could be encouraged by watching someone else go through recovery. Being able to do treatment in the NWT means there would be more understanding of our way of being and the trauma we carry. I have talked to lots of people in my community and they also want a treatment centre in the NWT. Being able to connect to our culture while healing is so important! When I was at the FOXY retreat, I wasn’t allowed my cell phone and I felt so connected to the land. Elders could even come in to support and speak to those seeking treatment to offer help in a traditional way. You should take this seriously because you never know when it could be someone’s last moments. We don’t talk about mental health enough and why people turn to substances. My school and teachers don’t talk about it, mental health should be a priority for all of us. Sincerely, Sierra McDonald #FOXY&SMASHGivesBack #NorthernKidKindness #FOXYSMASH
